1965 Mustang Fastback

A Day in the Life of a 1965 Fastback: 1998 Journal

1965 Mustang
Restoration: From Start to Finish
August 1998. I had owned 2 different 1966 Mustang Coupes during the past 4 years, and after realizing that I wasn't truly happy with the black Sprint Coupe I'd been driving the past 4 months, I made the decision to have the Mustang I've always wanted built.

My only real decision was choosing from two project cars that Carl had out back of the Bucks County Mustangs shop... a 1964 1/2 Coupe that had seen far better days, but also looked like it had been set up to be a racer, and a 1965 Fastback that had already had new floors and all the important metal work newly completed (engine compartment, cowl, all the potential leaky places).

I went with the Fastback, mostly because I'd wanted a Shelby, or something that looked like one, ever since I was a child, first hearing that 1966 350H roar down the road way back when, not even knowing what it was at the time; then a few short years later spotting a model of it in a hobby shop. That, and you just don't see as many 1965-66 Fastbacks on the road as you do Convertibles and Coupes. Oh yes, it must be the Fastback.

I was initally going to do it up as a Shelby replica, the opposite of so many other Shelby replicas around here (they went white with blue stripes, I always wanted blue with white stripes ever since I'd seen a picture of one in a nice Mustang picture book). I still don't know why I changed my mind, but I think it was because I still want whatever Shelby or replica I get my hands on to be that 1966 black and gold storm bringer. Someday.
