1965 Mustang Fastback
A Day in the Life of a 1965 Fastback: 2002 Journal
November 2002
Nov 9: Went up to the Scottsdale Pavilions for the first time
in a while, and stayed up there part of the afternoon and early evening.
Met a couple of new Mustang faces, some of whom were looking forward to
Nov 23, the All Mustang Rally at the Pavilions. Should be at least 100
Mustangs showing up for that event.
October 2002
Oct 19: The Wings and Wheels show was amazing. 135 cars turned
out, and all of them had their pictures taken with either the P51-D or the
with the Cobra attack helicopter (mostly the Cobras of course), and some
opted to have pictures taken with both aircraft.
And based on the amount of carbon that's built up on the inside of my 2-day
old tailpipes, the engine's running very rich. Gotta get that taken care of.
More pics of the cars at the show coming later...
Oct 17: Got the horse back from the shop...turns out that the
existing tailpipes were rotting off, and probably would have fallen off
on their own in the next year, so my replacing them turned out to be a
fortuitious choice. The biggest problem is now the new 3" pipes barely
extend beyond the body. I may get that fixed later, depends on if an
exhaust backwash problem develops. The heavy duty springs definitely
change the way it rides.
Oct 13: Found out at today's Mustang Club meeting that the state
legislature is more than likely to reintroduce a bill that would criminalize
all forms of cruising in a slightly misguided effort to curtail the gang
related and street racing related gatherings. the wording of the original
bill (which thankfully was defeated last year) was too broad, and would have
made it possible for as few as 3 or 4 people driving together to display
their cars at a show or a parade to be arrested and have their cars impounded.
Needless to say, this adversely affects all vehicle hobbyists, cars and
motorcycles, who are simply out to have a good time with their cars with
other people who enjoy like cars. I'm willing to bet that any gathering
of police cars and motorcycles for display would be illegal under the
wordings they chose (I'm still trying to get ahold of the original bill as
it was when defeated). This kind of clampdown would be bad, punishing all
car enthusiasts because of the fears of all gatherings on the parts of some,
and the illegal racing activities of a few others.
Hopefully, the hobbyists (which will include me) can get the wording of
the new bill (if it comes up again) to not be so broad as to endanger the
folks going to and from shows, parades and fund raisers. This club already
does drives that raise money for Thanksgiving food banks, Christmas toys
for underprivileged kids (two Toys for Tots runs)...it'd be a shame to lose
the ability to have those kinds of drives because of a few scared and
overzealous citizens groups who group all the car gatherings together in
the same categories because they aren't aware of how wide their wordings
encompass.
September 2002
Sep 25: Seat should be fixed and reinstalled by the weekend...
the guys doing the work are headed to a show in Pinetop, so it's now
or wait until next week. Also placed an order for the heavy duty rear
suspension, to finally complete the overhaul/replacement of the entire
suspension system that began in 2000.
The Copperstate Mustang Club is having a fall show at Champlin Fighter
Aircraft Museum, so members can get pics of their Mustangs taken with the
old P51 Mustang fighter plane. It'll be the last time we can do this,
since the Museum was sold and will be moving to Seattle next year.
Come June 1 2003, they'll be closed for the move.
August 2002
Aug 2: Driver's seat has a bigger problem...the frame is cracked
along with the back support peg needing to be unbent. I wonder if this
is yet more unnoticed damage from the accident 2 years ago. Off it goes
again to be fixed.
May 2002
May 3: Got the rest of work done this week. After the repairs,
the new brakes and the front end alignment, the horse handles noticeably
better now...not so much give and shake while driving and turning. Now I
really have to get the rear end work done.
April 2002
Apr 26: Took the horse in to get some maintenance work done...
oil change, check brakes. They found some other stuff while looking at
the brakes. Turns out baby's ball joints were in sorry shape, as well as
the lower right control arm. Looking at what the mechanic was seeing,
I have to wonder if some of that was residual damage from the accident
two years ago. No way to tell now because I never looked at it then, and
all I can do is wonder if they ever thought about checking that.
March 2002
Mar 23: Copperstate Mustang Club All Mustang Show, Earnhardt
Ford, Chandler AZ
I've got some nice pictures, but now I need to find a Windows machine to
see if I can read them...the Mac says invalid format, and I truly can't
remember if I had the camera format that disk or not. I'll be pissed if
I can't upload these pics...there were some gorgeous cars at this show.
