1965 Mustang Fastback
A Day in the Life of a 1965 Fastback: 2001 Journal
December 2001
Dec 25: A good day to go driving. Took the horse up and down
a lot of back roads, looking for scenic views that would make pretty
desert backdrops to take pictures against. Found a couple different
spots along the roads leading up to Saguaro Lake, and even took a few
good pictures with the lake and it's cliff walls as backdrops.

Nov 23: Finally got around to getting that fuel pump replaced.
New pump, one that belongs in that car, new hoses, and that POS fuel
regulator is history, along with a secondary fuel filter that had been
inserted in the fuel line. The engine compartment looks much better now.
Clean. Simple. Elegant.

Oct 6: Copperstate Mustang Club Annual Fall Show, Peoria Sports
Complex, Peoria AZ
I entered my horse in the Participant's Choice 1965-66 Fastback class,
and got a 3rd place trophy. I also spent the morning as a "learning"
judge in the 1965-66 Fastback class...that was a truly educational
outing. A ton of minor things count that I never took into consideration
for keeping my car daily road worthy. Although, I'm not sure I'd want
to spend the 20 hours a week required to keep the engine compartment
clean enough to eat off of, it does make for a sight to behold at a show.
July 2001
Starting to get too hot to drive during the weekends...I still want to
head back up to the Pavilions show one more time before August gets here.
June 2001
$10 a year to register a car with historic plates in Arizona. I Like.
But I'm still looking for a good desert landscape spot to take the new
pictures...maybe I need to head for the north end of the valley...
May 2001
Next up, getting the car registered out here, and getting a good desert photo
shoot session and put those new pics up here.
May 19: Today is Mustang Madness Day at the McDonald's Cruise-In.
This has to be the most amazing long-running car show event I've ever heard
of. Every Saturday, every month of the year, there is a car exhibition held
at The Pavilions in Scottsdale AZ. The McDonald's that hosts it is done up
retro style, 1950s decor. They blast music from the 50s and 60s through their
loudspeaker system from 3pm till 10pm each Saturday night, and you can bring
your car and park in the appropriate row, and hang out for as little or as
long as you want. All cars from all makes, models and years are welcome,
all the time.
Folks come and walk around, admiring the cars, talking to the owners, and
the McDonald's will have little trivia questions or drawings. I've seen some
truly rare and beautiful cars, real honest-to-goodness Shelbys, a handful
or other rare Mustangs, some Corvettes and GTOs that were breathtaking, a
handful of vintage 1930s trucks, antique motorcycles and current ones, and
even a boatload of newer cars, shiny and all tricked out.
April 2001
Well, it's official. I've joined the Copper State Mustang Club, a Phoenix
area Club. They had a sponsored club event this weekend, and I made a few
contacts who could work on my car, desert-proof it for me, so to speak.
Several of the older members didn't believe it was an East Coast car...the
lack of rust amazed and surprised them.
I've discovered that a bunch of folks out here that restore cars will
actually turn cars with very little damage or rust into parts cars...cars
that back East would be considered prime finds. The standards of the desert
collectors are amazingly stringent...and not just the Mustang crowd.
March 2001
Mar 17: It's been a little over 3 months since I've seen or heard
my car, and after replacing a dead battery, it's running just fine. I've
driven it around as much as I can today, and it turns out that black smoke
I'd been seeing when gunning it was because of all the old gas still in the
tank. It didn't take long to fix that little situation...
