The Kigers are a unique breed of horse whose history dates back to the discovery of the New World by the Conquistadors. Located by the Bureau of Land Management in 1977, these horses were found on the high desert of southeastern Oregon. Government officials agreed that they had a very different and special kind of horse.

The Kiger MesteƱo Association was founded in July 1988 to protect and preserve these remaining wild mustangs and their counterpart in captivity. A registry and standard of perfection have been established for Kiger and half-Kiger horses. With nearly 500 horses registered with the KMA, and growing interest in this exceptional breed, their continued survival is assured.

The tiny horse, only 4 feet tall, was discovered purely by chance, grazing in groups of two or three in the Riwoche Valley, an unexplored region in northeastern Tibet. The expedition, led by French anthropologist Michel Peissel to study another rare species of horse, had been forced to divert from it’s planned route due to bad weather.
