Update: Don Johnson in Hot Water at CBS by Mark Schwed
CBS is cracking down on Don Johnson because his new cop show, Off Duty, is turning into a bust. With no pilot, cast, or script, the show may not be ready for midseason. "He was having personal problems, which everybody knows about," says one CBS source. All that exists of the show so far is a short CSB promo tape featuring the actor talking about plans for the series. "It's gonna be racy," he reportedly says. "There'll be a transvestite." One CBS insider says CBS's new entertainment president, Leslie Moonves, gave Johnson "a dressing-down." Johnson's Miami Vice pal Michael Mann has been replaced as exec producer, and the actor has new marching orders: "Don was told he'll shoot the script commissioned by CBS as written, or he'll be in breach of contract," says the source. Johnson blames the delay on the change in CBS management and says "It's all about the material. I'm ready to go when the material is right."
