Chapter 2
"Hey, Crockett." Rico said, cradling the receiver of his phone.

Sonny looked up from the report sheet he was filling out.

"Castillo wants us in his office for an update on Mendoza."

Sonny nodded, giving his pencil a light toss across the desk. "Fine with me, partner. Done way to much paperwork today anyway."

He stood up and headed for Martin's office with Rico right behind him. Their boss was seated behind his desk when they walked in, staring silently at the folder laying closed on his desktop.

"Hey, Lieutenant." Sonny said as he sat down on Martin's black couch.

Rico sat down beside him and Martin leaned forward, resting his arms on top of his desk. "Where are you at," he asked without preamble. His gruff voice was not commanding, and yet it demanded to be addressed.

"Well," Sonny said, rubbing a hand over his face. "Our last meet with Mendoza was a bust out. All of our sources said he could handle major weight, but when we told him how much we wanted he said he'd have to talk to his boss."

"We're a little doubtful about that though," Rico continued for him. "None of our sources know anything about a boss. Mendoza wants us to make a meet with this invisible man."

"We told him we'd get back to him." Sonny finished.

"Is there a name connected with this unknown boss?" Martin asked.

"Dwight Forrestor." Sonny replied.

"Did you run a make on him?"

"We tried." Rico reported. "The Feds have his files locked up."

"So what do you want us to do, Lieutenant?" Sonny asked.

Martin was silent for several long moments. Both detectives could almost hear his mental machinery clicking. Finally, he said, "Set up the introduction. When you go to the meet, I want you to take plenty of back up. Switek, Gina, Trudy, see if you can procure SWAT in case something goes wrong."

"It's just an introduction, Marty." Sonny said, "You really think we need to call out the national guard?"

"I don't like it." Martin replied simply, locking gazes with Sonny.

Sonny saw the truth of those words in his friend's eyes. Through the years he had spent working with Martin, he had come to understand the almost psychic way that the Lieutenant had of understanding things. When he said he didn't like it, what he meant was that something was giving him bad vibes. And judging from the amount of back up he wanted them to take, those bad vibes bordered on deadly.

"Okay, Marty." He said nodding slightly. "We'll make sure our asses are covered."

They got up and left Martin's office, returning to their own respective desks.

"Man," Rico breathed sitting down. "He's intense today."

"Mmm." Sonny responded, staring vacantly at his unfinished report sheet.

Something had begun to gnaw at his gut. Perhaps it was just seeing the concern in Martin's eyes, but it felt like more than that. Why was Forrestor's file locked up so tight? Why had nobody ever heard of him if he could handle the kind of weight they had requested? Why....

"Hey, partner?" Rico's voice cut his thought off clean. He looked up to find his friend watching him with a concerned expression on his face. "You okay?"

"Yeah, fine." He paused. "What's say we go grab a bite to eat and then give Mendoza a call?"

"Sounds good." Rico replied, but his tone was unconvinced.

"Maybe somewhere in the middle we can drop in on ol' Izzy and see if he knows anything about our friend Forrestor."

"Ha." Rico scoffed standing up and slipping into his suit coat. "I think this thing is way out of Moreno's league."

Sonny stood up, unconsciously checking his pants pockets to make sure he had everything. "Ya' never know."

Grinning, Rico followed him out of OCB.
