Chapter 9
Sonny stared up at Gorge, his vision sliding in and out of focus. There was no doubt that neither he nor Colt would walk away from this confrontation.

"Colt," Gorge addressed the boy, who was holding his destroyed knee and crying silently. "You are in serious trouble."

Colt looked up at Gorge and then away again, eyes closed tightly against the pain he was already feeling. Gorge nodded to two of his men who picked Sonny up and drug him back away from Colt. Gorge knelt down on one knee in front of Colt, taking the boy by the hair and forcing his head back until his eyes opened again.

"And believe me, Boy, you're going to want to be dead long before you are."

Rico weaved in and out of the traffic, cursing rush hour. He was still almost fifteen minutes away from the house and acutely aware that nearly forty minutes had already passed since he'd got Sonny's phone call. With his foot hard on the accelerator he hit the next turn off and slid into the exit curve, wheels squealing as they tried to keep a grip on the blacktop. Ignoring red lights and weaving through the traffic he pulled up a half a block away from their safehouse. Without even bothering to turn the ignition off, he got out and unholstered his gun. There was an unfamiliar car sitting in the drive of the safehouse and Rico knew he may be too late.

Sonny cried out as his wounded arm was twisted up behind his back and wrenched savagely. Gorge backed away from Colt and Sonny winced. The boy was barely recognizable so violent had Gorge beaten him.

"What do you say, Boy?" Gorge sneered, "Maybe I ought to go get Lyle so he can have one more round with you."

There was no response from Colt. His eyes were open, filled with pain, but whatever insuation Gorge had just given, Colt didn't understand. The sneer left Gorge's lips. He raised his gun.

"Gorge, no!" Sonny yelled trying to struggle against his captors.

Gorge ignored him and leveled his gun. Sonny tried once to break away but they wrenched his arm until he almost passed out from the pain. One shot and it was over. Colt lay lifeless on the floor and Gorge turned to Sonny.

"Now, Detective. Your turn."

He aimed the gun at Sonny and then suddenly pitched forward as a bloody spray erupted from his chest. The two heavies holding Sonny released him and went for their guns but were dead before they even cleared the leather. Sonny looked around totally bewildered and saw Rico standing next to the foyer wall. His partner came towards him, scanning for anymore intruders but there were none. Sonny looked at Colt and felt tears begin to burn his eyes.

Everything wasn't going to be okay.
