"Yes?" He asked quietly, his deep brown eyes coming up to look at Rico.
"We got problems, Lieutenant." Rico said. "Sonny's been shot. Him and Colt are holed up at the house on the bay. Sonny doesn't want to go to the hospital. He thinks Gorge's got enough power that he's gonna be watching out for him to show up. Also, the detective from Southside, Lyle, well apparently he's one of the bad guys. I think he was probably involved with the hit at the boat because it wasn't long after I gave him the address that it happened. And the best part is, the man himself just got out on bail."
Martin sighed and leaned forward in his chair. The anxiety that flowed through him at the news was kept well hidden by years of training and when he spoke there was no emotion in his tone. "You get over to the safehouse. Crockett's in no shape to do any kind of protection. I have a doctor friend. I'll go get him and bring him out."
Rico nodded and ducked out of the office without a word. As soon as he was gone, Martin stood up and, grabbing his jacket left the office. He was on his way out the double doors leading into OCB when the tail end of a conversation caught his ear.
"Sure thing, Lyle. Anytime. Yeah. Bye now."
He turned on his heels and stood over the detective as he hung up the phone. He pulled the name Stevenson out of his mental files as the guy looked up at him. He'd been in the office for almost a year now and had a squeaky clean record.
"What's up, Lieutenant?" He asked.
"Who were you talking to, Detective?"
Stevenson smiled, "A friend of mine from Southside. He's got a priority one protection and he thinks they have a leak in their department. Wanted to know if he could use one of our houses.'
Martin's eyes narrowed, making the smile Stevenson wore disappear almost instantly. "What's wrong?"
"What house did you give them?" Martin asked, not bothering to go into the protocol aspect at the moment. He'd take care of that after the crisis had passed.
Stevenson shrugged. "The one on the bay. He said he needed one near the water where they had more than one escape route."
Without a word, Martin grabbed Stevenson phone and dialed the number to the safehouse. He let it ring almost ten times with no response before hanging up and dialing Rico's car phone. Rico answered on the second ring.
"Yeah?"
"Gorge knows where they're at." "Shit." Rico responded. "My foot's on the floor."
"I'm on my way now." Martin said.
"Meet you there."
Martin hung up and looked at Stevenson. "I'll talk to you later." He left OCB leaving Stevenson staring after him with a puzzled expression.
Sonny heard the ringing of a phone as if from a great distance. He struggled to come out of the haze that was covering him, but by the time he made it to the surface, the ringing had stopped. He looked around the room and saw Colt staring at him from across the room.
"It'll be okay." He murmured.
Colt shook his head and walked over to the couch. The boy laid the back of his hand across Sonny's forehead. "You've got a fever."
Sonny shrugged, "It'll be okay."
Colt paced away from the couch and looked out the window. Sonny watched him, trying to keep the haze from covering him again. He had to keep it together at least until Rico got here. Then his partner could take over and everything would indeed be okay.
The haze was beginning to overtake him again when he saw Colt stiffen and step away from the window. When the boy turned to look at him, the terror on his face convinced Sonny that it wasn't going to be okay.
"What?"
Colt's throat worked for several moments as he struggled to say something. When he finally got the words out they were no more than a whisper. "It's Gorge."
Sonny struggled up off the couch. "What?"
Amid the haze the questions swirled. How had he found them? How had he gotten here so fast? How was he going to protect Colt in this condition? He stopped himself. That wasn't a question. He had to protect the boy.
"Go upstairs, Colt." He said.
Colt turned to look at him and the tears were beginning to well in his eyes. He was silent a moment, struggling with something Sonny couldn't even begin to fathom. Finally, he said, "No. Gorge wants me. He may let you live as long as he has me."
Sonny shook his head, more than touched by the boy's words. "No. He'll kill both of us. Please, go upstairs and I'll try and hold them off until my partner gets here."
But even before the boy could start towards the stairs, the haze swept through Sonny again followed by a brief darkness that caused one knee to buckle. He caught himself on the arm of the couch and forced himself to stand up. Colt came to him just as the front door burst open and three men tumbled through the opening, guns up and tracking. Reacting without a word, Colt turned, firing off two rapid shots as he dove for cover. One bullet buried itself in the wall, but the other scored a mark, flinging one of the men back and down where he lay still
Sonny tried to dive out of the way, but wound up falling behind the couch. Return fire from the two men chewed the wall above his head and he was suddenly aware his wound had paralyzed his arm. It hung lifeless and no matter how hard he tried he couldn't move it. He was aware of more gunfire; both from Colt's gun and from the intruders and then a third gun opened fire from somewhere in the back of the house.
"Put it down, Colt." He heard Gorge say. "Make this easy on yourself."
The underlying malice in his tone convinced Sonny it wasn't going to be easy for Colt or himself. But they were surrounded and pretty well screwed. More gunshots and he heard Colt cry out. Moments later, hands grabbed him to his feet and he looked around. Colt was laying on the floor, blood flowing from his leg where one of the shooters had taken out his knee. Gorge was standing over him, holding the gun Sonny had given him and examining it. The two thugs that had Sonny shoved him over towards Gorge and he stumbled, going to his knees next to Colt.
Gorge looked at Sonny and a predatory smile crossed his lips. "Well well, Detective. We meet again."
