"What?"
"I asked you if you spent the whole night here," Rico repeated.
Sonny glanced at his watch, startled to find it was six in the morning. "Must've fell asleep." He stood up and stretched, looking over towards Colt. The boy was sleeping comfortably.
"We need to talk," Rico said.
"Shoot."
"Not here. Let me buy you a cup of coffee."
Sonny frowned, not liking what he heard in his friend's voice. "Okay."
Rico led him out of the room and down to the hospital cafeteria. They both got a cup and took a seat.
"So what's the problem?" Sonny asked.
"The Feds have started giving us some static on this. They say that some of the stuff Constanza was involved in is federal which gives them jurisdiciton."
Sonny growled into his coffee, "So we lose our ass to the Feds again. They gonna leave anything for us?"
"Well, that's not the worst of it."
"What is?"
"They want Colt. He's either going to help them or he's going to jail."
"Jail?" Sonny repeated. "He's not old enough."
"He's sixteen and they're threatening to try him as an adult."
"That's bullshit."
Rico shrugged. "Not our call, partner. They're gonna be by to speak with him this morning."
Sonny sat his coffe cup down almost hard enough to constitute a slam. "No. He's in no shape to be badgered."
"So what're you gonna do, man? Argue with the Feds?"
Sonny didn't answer. "When are they gonna be here?"
Rico glanced at his watch. "Probably about nine, maybe earlier."
"Who's in charge?"
"Agent Saul Kingston."
The name wasn't familiar to Sonny. "Have you met him?"
"I spoke to him on the phone."
"And?"
"And what, Sonny? What're you driving at?"
"I wanna know what he was like."
Rico frowned at Sonny. "You need to forget about whatever it is you're thinking about, partner. Step back and let it go."
"I can't, Rico. Not this time."
Rico sighed and sipped his coffee.
Sonny was quiet for a long time, turning over possibilites. He wasn't sure yet what he was going to do, what he could do, but he knew he had to do something. He glanced at his own watch. It was almost seven-thirty now so whatever he was going to do he had to figure it out soon. Without a word, he got up and left.
Rico watched his partner leave and sighed. Saul Kingston had seemed like a decent guy on the phone, but he might not take kindly to having Sonny get in his face over the Fed's decision. Sighing, he got up and left.
He found Sonny standing outside Colt's room talking with another man. Rico knew right off it must be Agent Kingston.
"He's not in any shape to be talking to you right now," Sonny was telling the Fed.
"I'm afraid the doctor disagrees with you're diagnosis, Detective," Saul said.
"Look, he's not going to tell you anything. He hasn't said two words since I met him. He's a very scared boy."
"All he needs is a reason to talk."
"Really?" Rico saw the anger slipping into his partner's eyes, "Listen, pal, the boy is frightened enough without you holding threats over his head. That's the last thing in the world he needs right now."
"Detective Crockett, I'm here to do my job, not argue with you. Now, if you will please step out of the way, I'll go do it."
Sonny was silent for a moment, but Rico could see his friend's mind clicking as he struggled for something, anything.
"Okay, what about this? Turn custody of Colt over to me. Give me some time with him and I'll get you what you need."
Saul studied Sonny intently for several moments, but Rico couldn't read the expression. Finally, he said, "You were the first person to have contact with Colt weren't you?"
Sonny nodded.
Saul was silent a moment longer before nodding. "Okay. He's in your charge. But you better get us something or we'll do it the other way."
"Okay."
Saul turned and walked away. Sonny inhaled deeply and looked at Rico.
"I hope you know what you're doing partner," Rico said.
"So do I partner," Sonny said quietly. "So do I."
Sonny turned and walked into Colt's room to find the boy staring at the door. It was obvious from the expression on his face he had heard the argument.
"Good morning, Colt," Sonny greeted, "Feeling any better?"
Colt didn't answer, but his gaze didn't leave Sonny as is had the other night. Sonny saw something there, somethink akin to curiosity in the boy's eyes.
"Doctor's going to release you today." Sonny paused debating on how to continue. "I'm sure you realize that we can't let you go home."
Colt was still silent, staring.
"I arranged it for you to come stay with me for awhile. Until things get settled with your Dad."
Something flickered in Colt's eyes and when he spoke his voice was low and full of hate. "Don't call him my Dad."
Sonny raised his eyebrows, surprised that he had spoke and even more surprised at the hate. "He said you were his son."
"Well I'm not."
"What we're you doing at his house?"
"I live there."
Sonny frowned feeling a little puzzled. "What is Gorge to you?"
"Nothing. My mom split and left me there when I was six."
"I see," Sonny said. "Well, you need to come stay with me for awhile. I live on a boat. You'll like it."
Colt looked away, his gaze resting once again on the far wall. Sonny glanced over at Rico who shrugged slightly.
"I'll be back to pick you up later, Colt."
The boy neither acknowledged or denied the statement. Sonny shrugged inwardly and walked back out of the room with Rico.
"You got your work cut out for you, partner," Rico noted as they walked down the hall.
"Yeah, maybe."
"No maybe about it. That boy doesn't trust anybody, least of all you."
"Me more than anyone," Sonny corrected. "Who was the one that offered comfort amid chaos?"
"A cop," Rico replied. "One of the people I'm sure he's been trained to hate and distrust."
Sonny was silent. He knew Rico was right. He also knew if he couldn't break through to the kid, the Feds would eat him alive.
"Let's go see Castillo," he said, and headed out of the hospital without waiting for a reply.
