Chapter 2
Sonny was standing in the waiting room of Miami Dade when the doctor came out to talk to him. Rico was sitting, leafing through a magazine, but he put it to the side and joined his partner as soon as he seen the doctor.

Sonny had been angry since finding Colt. Angry at Constanza. Frustrated that the boy hadn't seemed to understand. Rico knew Sonny well, better than any other person on this earth and he knew the weakness his friend had for situations like this. But for the time being all he could do was be there for him.

"How is he?" Sonny asked without preamble.

The doctor sighed deeply and Rico sensed that he was one of those doctors that honestly cared about his patients and their individual situations. "There was nothing broken and we didn't find any internal damage. We'll have him stay overnight but that's just procedure."

"That's good to hear." Sonny said.

"Well, there was one other thing." the doctor hesitated. "We did find evidence of sexual assault."

Sonny reacted to that immediately. He stiffened and his gaze pierced the doctor until he shifted his weight uncomfortably. "What?"

"You heard me."

"That bastard." Sonny whispered vehemenately.

Rico dropped a hand on Sonny's shoulder, "Hey, partner. Why don't you let me buy you some dinner? Let Colt get some rest and tomorrow you can stop by and see him."

Sonny looked at Rico and the doctor took the moment to excuse himself.

"I think I'm gonna stick around while, Tubbs." He glanced out the bay windows of the waiting room and when he spoke again, his voice was quiet, almost confidential, "Something about that kid got to me, Rico. He was so scared. Acted like I was going to belt him every time I moved. I want to help him, man."

Rico watched his partner intensely. It was obvious he was speaking the truth. "Sonny, you know they're gonna take care of him."

"They who? The state? Throw him in a foster home somewhere? Or maybe a psych hospital? He needs TLC partner. Not a bunch of chaos being shuffled from one place to another."

Rico was silent. This was going to be one of those instances where he would be fighting a losing battle if he continued.

"Go on home, Rico. I'm gonna stay awhile before I heard out."

"You're sure, Sonny? I can stay with you."

"No, man. Go on." Sonny slapped him on the arm. "I'll be fine."

Rico nodded and headed out of the hospital.

Sonny watched until his partner was walking across the parking lot before turning and heading up to Colt's room. The boy was laying in the bed flinching constantly as two nurses worked around him. Sonny frowned. If he ever got ahold of Constanza...

The nurses left and Sonny went to the bedside. Colt acknowledged him presence by a glance before returning his gaze to the far wall.

"Remember me?" Sonny asked.

When Colt remained silent so did Sonny. He studied the boy intently, seeing things now that he hadn't noticed before. The boy's build was good so obviously the abuse didn't go that far. And there was a hardness just beneath the depths of the terror. A hardness that indicated a strong knowledge of how the world worked.

"Why did Gorge do this to you, Colt?" Sonny asked softly.

Colt blinked and looked at Sonny for the first time. He didn't say anything but his eyes studied Sonny intently, as if he was searching for something. The search almost seemed prodded by a fear or embarrassment and it made Sonny wonder about what the doctor had mentioned. Did Gorge sexually assault him? Was he actually sick enough to do that to his own kid?

Sonny left himself open for the boy until Colt looked away. Then he sat down in the chair by the bed. "I'm just going to rest here for a few minutes, Colt. If you don't mind."

He sat down in the chair by the bedside as the boy turned away from him.

Colt continued watching the detective out of the corner of his eye. He was admittedly confused at the concern the man was showing. He was a cop and according to his father all cops were bad, not to mention dangerous. So there was only one logical conclusion, he wanted something. Colt didn't have a clue what, there was nothing he knew that could help them.

He had been scared when the police had raided the house. He was still pulling himself together from...from...his mind refused to acknowledge from what, and then this guy had appeared. He had done the only thing he could think of, back away.

Then the next thing he knew, here he was, stuck in the hospital with people poking and prodding everywhere. And then this cop showed up again. Colt tried to be cool, but the idea of the guy just sitting there watching him made him awfully nervous.
