Part II, Chapter 2: Ticket to Miami

Billy awoke to the smell of fresh-brewing coffee. He felt terrible -- who was that pounding on his head? He opened his eyes and did a double take. Where was he?

Oh yeah, he was in New York wasn't he, but where was this place and how did he get here? He closed his eyes again, hoping the fog would clear, and the rumbling in his stomach would disappear, but it didn't. He sat up and held his head in his hands. He had never had a hangover this bad before.

Sonny walked into the bedroom with a cup of coffee. He took one look at the green complexion on his son's face and chuckled to himself. He pointed down the hall. "The bathroom's that way kid," he said. Billy managed to get to his feet and stumble towards the door. Sonny put the coffee on the dresser, grabbed him around the waist and helped steer him in the right direction. "This way son." Billy just made it to the can on time.

His insides felt better afterwards, but his head was still spinning. He finally made his way out to the kitchen and sat down with his head in his hands. He felt sick. What happened last night? Sonny just laughed. "Having a good time in New York Billy?"

"What did you guys do to me last night?" he asked.

"We didn't do anything to you -- you did that all by yourself. Next time maybe you shouldn't try to keep up with us old timers." He took a bottle of bourbon down from the cupboard, poured a shot and put the glass on the table in front of his son. "Hair of the dog?" he asked with a smile on his face.

Billy got one whiff of the alcohol and ran down the hall to the bathroom once more. Sonny laughed again. "Time to teach that kid how to drink," he said to no one in particular. But he knew that wasn't really fair. Billy had bragged that he was going to show the old timers how to drink. What he didn't know was that Rico and Sonny were dumping half the shooters instead of drinking them. It was an old trick used by undercover cops when they wanted to get someone drunk to pump him for information. But, it had been fun last night. He hadn't had a night out on the town like that in he didn't know how long. They were celebrating -- celebrating Billy's graduation, the reunion of old friends and his release from hell.

Sonny went down the hall to see how the kid was doing. "Why don't you just head back to bed for a while. Make sure you drink lots of water. It'll help with the headache. I'm just going down to the station to see Rico. I'll see you when I get back."

"Okay dad. You go ahead. I'll see you later." Then there was another loud groan from the bathroom.

Sonny was still chuckling when he hit the street. Caroline would kill him if she ever found out about last night. But what the heck, a man had to have some fun with his kid once in a while. And he had to admit, it was kind of a mean trick.

He strolled into the station and walked up to the desk sergeant. "Sonny Crockett to see Detective Tubbs. I believe he's expecting me."

"One minute sir." The sergeant picked up the phone, dialled a number and spoke into the mouthpiece. "He'll be right down."

Rico was there almost immediately. "How's the kid?" he asked.

"Bad, really bad. If you ever tell Caroline about this, I'll ..."

"You'll what, man?"

"I'll say it was your fault pal."

Rico laughed. "Come on up. You're not carrying are you?"

"No, my piece is back in Salt Cay, and they don't give out guns in rehab Rico. It's not that type of place."

"Right. Come on. There's some people I want you to meet,"

Rico escorted Sonny up to the vice section and introduced him to the squad. So this was the famous Sonny Crockett, the guy that they had shut down the Fuente operation for. He didn't look all that tough, but anyone who went through what he did and came back for more must have a lot going for him. "The lieutenant is expecting us," Rico said as he led Sonny over to an office and knocked on the door. A voice from inside told them to come in.

"Welcome to New York Crockett. I've heard a lot about you from Tubbs here, and from Lieutenant Castillo in Miami. He says you were a good cop. Marty and I go back a long way. Any recommendation from him is good enough for me."

It was a very different reception from the one he and Tubbs had received in New York the last time they had come here looking for help. But they were with Miami Vice then, and the New York police resented the fact that two southern cops were in town to show them how to get the Revillas brothers. Now Rico was one of them and things were different.

Rico had decided to tell the lieutenant the whole story. His boss sat back in his chair and listened. When he had finished, the lieutenant looked at Crockett and asked him how sure he was that this kid was Rico's son.

"Very sure," he replied, " but I can't be 100 percent, not yet. We need to check some things out first."

"So what do you want me to do about it?" he asked, sitting forward at the same time.

Rico spoke up. He asked for the use of police resources to check things out and he asked for some time to work on the case. The lieutenant sat back in his chair again. He told them to go get a coffee or something and come back in an hour. He would give them an answer then.

They went down the street to a small café, grabbed a java each, took them out to the patio and talked for a while about old times. When they finished the coffees they headed back to the station. The lieutenant ushered them in right away.

"I talked to the people downtown," he said. "They want Fuente real bad, but he's a much bigger player down south. Our people are willing to work with Miami Vice to get to this guy. So I called Castillo in Miami and spoke with him. He's agreed to have Tubbs work for us down there on special assignment. As far as Crockett is concerned -- that's for him to work out with Castillo."

He signed some papers and passed them across the desk to Rico. "Tubbs, you can leave any time. Here's the paperwork. Fill in the rest and take it to HR." He stood up, walked around the desk and headed to the door. Before he opened it, he turned around and shook their hands. "Good luck," he said. Then he turned to face Rico. "Just keep in mind Tubbs, the reason you're down there is to put Fuente out of circulation. If that means using the kid, I expect you to do just that."

They walked back to the apartment together. "Thanks for everything, Sonny. You can go on back to Ocala with Billy now. I'll take it from here."

"I don't think so Rico. We're in this together pal. I know the kid -- he trusts me. And I'm your ticket to Fuente -- he won't be very happy that I got away from him. Whether you like it or not, you need me. And besides, I owe you."

Rico knew there was no use arguing with his friend - it was a done deal. He remembered saying something similar to Sonny the first time he went to Miami in search of Calderone. "Cool. Maybe it'll be like the old times, you and me together." They headed through the door of the building. Rico walked over to the elevator and pressed the up button. "Well, I guess I have some bags to pack."

While Rico was getting his things together and making arrangements for the flight to Florida, Sonny told Billy that he had to go to Miami on business. "I'll get you a ticket to Ocala. When I finish this thing with Rico I'll call you. Maybe we can spend a few weeks together on the Vitus II."

"No way, dad," he replied. I'm coming to Miami with you."

"Oh really?" I don't think so. You're going to Ocala. You talked me into New York, but you can forget about Miami." He really didn't want to argue with his son, but this time he was determined not to give in.

"I have to go there. My car's in Miami. I drove it down from Ocala. That's how we got to the airport - remember?"

"Okay," Sonny sighed resignedly. He called over to Rico. "Get three plane tickets to Miami, Rico, but only two hotel reservations." He turned his gaze back to his son, stared him straight in the eyes. "But when we get to Miami kid, I'm walking you straight to your car and you're heading north." He shot a pointed finger at the kid. "Is that clear?"

Billy knew that this wasn't the time to argue. He just nodded his head and started to pack his bag.
