Part II, Chapter 14: The Safe-House

Monday morning, bright and early, Castillo called Sonny, Rico, Stan and Trudy into his office to review Saturday night’s activities. Everything seemed to have gone well, almost too well. The dealer’s directions were right on the money, Stan’s tracking device had worked like a charm, Sanchez/Esteban was ready to make the deal and for good measure, his new partner would be along for the take-down, and it looked like Sonny’s and Rico’s covers had remained intact.

But for some reason, Martin couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t quite right. Why had Sanchez handed over $70 000 from his partner to Burnett? It didn’t make sense. The sum seemed high and the amount unusual. And from the expressions on their faces, he had a feeling the same question was on everyone else’s mind too.

“Does $70 000 make any sense to you?” Castillo asked the blonde-haired detective. “Any idea why the man would hand over that amount?”

“Damned if I know,” Crockett replied shrugging his shoulders.

“I don’t like it,” Castillo returned.

Something seemed fishy, but he couldn’t quite put a finger on it and he always felt uncomfortable when the pieces didn’t fit perfectly into place. He was thinking about calling the whole thing off but Crockett convinced him they had to go ahead with the buy. If they didn’t they would lose their chance to bust Sanchez and his partner before the crooks had a chance to set up business and 50 kilos of pure cocaine would hit Miami’s streets within days.

What Crockett hadn’t told his boss was that he too sensed something wasn’t quite right with the deal. He couldn’t put his finger on it either - it was just a feeling. Crockett’s feelings had an uncanny habit of being well-founded more often than not, and it worried him. He knew if he had said anything Marty would have cancelled the operation for sure, and it could be a long time before they would have another chance to nab the slimeball - a long time for Sanchez to find out that Jess was alive and well and living in Miami FLA.

“Okay,” Castillo finally agreed, “but I want an army of back-up standing by.”

He still felt uneasy about it, but he signed the requisition for one and a quarter million dollars, enough to purchase 50 kilos of Colombia’s finest produce, refined to a fine white powder, and sent it down the hall with Tiger to get the Captain’s signature. It wasn’t the first time Castillo had asked for that type of money, but in all the years he had been lieutenant of Miami Vice, only once had the money he requisitioned not been returned on schedule. Even then the five hundred thousand eventually turned up. The Captain signed the requisition with no hesitation, fully confident that this sum too would end up back in lockup. Castillo planned to take the requisition downtown for final approval that afternoon. He had one last piece of business to clear up at headquarters and he figured he could look after both matters at the same time.

They were just tidying up the last of the details when the rest of the squad started trickling in for the regular Monday morning briefing. The last case review on the docket was the Sanchez operation. All ears picked up - it had been a while since a major player had been taken down by the unit, and the excitement was evident. Not even Castillo’s announcement that all detectives would be on duty Wednesday night could dampen their spirits.

It wasn’t long after the meeting broke up that Gina strode into the squad room and headed straight over to Crockett’s s desk.

“You got a few minutes Sonny?” she asked half under her breath.

“For you darlin’,” he replied, smiling back at her and closing the file he was reading, “anytime.”

“Is he in?” she asked nodding in the direction of Castillo’s office.

Sonny rose from his chair and laying a hand on her shoulder walked with her to Marty’s office and knocked on the door.

“Come,” the voice inside replied.

Crockett opened the door and followed her inside, closing the door behind them.

“I was just at the hospital,” Gina began. “Jessica is being released tomorrow and I want to check out the safe house and finalize the security details before then.” She glanced at Crockett before continuing. “I thought maybe Sonny could work with me on it.”

Without saying a word, the lieutenant opened the top drawer of his desk and took out a set of keys and a pad of paper. He wrote an address on the top sheet and handed it to her. “Keep it low profile - no unnecessary attention. And make sure whomever you use is totally reliable. If you need any extra help, get some officers from the outlying districts who don’t know Jessica or Sanchez.” He was still feeling uncomfortable and didn’t want to take any more chances than necessary.

“Right,” she said, taking the keys and slip of paper

“Keep me informed,” the lieutenant concluded as way of dismissal, and then went back to reading the files on his desk. There was no reason for any further instructions - he had full confidence that Gina and Crockett would come up with a suitable plan for keeping Jessica out of harm’s way until Sanchez was safely under wraps.

They took the Barchetta to a luxurious contemporary residence on one of the Sunset Islands. The house was private and secluded, hidden away on a beautifully landscaped acre of prime real estate that faced westward onto the intracoastal water way - a great place for the drug lord who once owned it to conduct private business, and a great place to hide someone away from dangerous, prying eyes. The property was surrounded by mature privacy hedges, a colorful, fragrant mixture of cocoplum, hibiscus and orange jasmine. The only access from land, was through an eight-foot high security gate at the driveway entrance. A private boat-landing on the waterway afforded the only other way in or view onto the estate.

After checking out the house and deciding on the security plans Gina and Sonny sauntered slowly over to the landing and sat down at the water’s edge. For the first time since he had returned to Miami they had an opportunity to chat privately, just the two of them. A lot of water had gone under the bridge since the hectic, unsettled days when they had been lovers. After years in between, both of them finally felt content with their lives.

“I’m happy for you Sonny,” Gina told him, looking into his eyes, the look one of deep-rooted friendship now rather than the starry-eyed wonder she once felt.

“Me too,” he replied. “I mean, I’m happy that you’re happy,” he explained. He took her hand in his and stared into those beautiful deep brown eyes. Gad - she was still a beautiful woman.

“I’m sorry Gina,” he said. ‘I’m sorry for all the pain and hurt I put you through. I guess I was a number one jerk back then.”

“Forget it - that’s all in the past. And besides, it takes two Crockett. It wasn’t all your fault. And we did have some pretty good times too if you remember.” He smiled, recalling some of those times.

She drew her hand away and reaching up to grab hold of his shoulders, spoke sincerely and from the heart. “You helped me through a lot of tough times, Sonny. When I really needed someone, you were always there for me. I’d have given it all up a long time ago if it hadn’t been for you.”

“And you were always there for me too Gina, a lot more than I ever deserved. Even when I was Burnett, you never gave up on me, though God only knows why - I sure didn’t deserve it.”

“You’ll always be special Crockett,” she said kissing him gently on the cheek. It was a kiss of deep abiding friendship.

He reached out, his arms enfolding her in a warm embrace. “Thanks Gina,” he said. “You’re pretty special too.” Drawing back he kissed her softly on the forehead. “You’re an amazing lady, Calabrese.”

They stood up, and walked arm-in-arm back to the car, both of them comfortable in a friendship that had stood the test of time and tribulation.

At 9:00 AM the next morning Sonny Crockett was at Carson Memorial Hospital to pick up Jessica and take her to the safe-house. She had been dressed and ready an hour beforehand, and was waiting anxiously for the nurse to deliver the discharge papers and doctor’s instructions.

‘What took you so long?” she demanded impatiently when he arrived. “I want to get outta here.”

‘Whoa, take it easy darlin’,” he laughed. “You can’t go anywhere until the nurse gets here anyway.”

As if on cue, a matronly nurse came into the room with a clipboard full of papers to read and sign. Slowly and deliberately, she reviewed homecare instructions and daily physiotherapy routine that would aid the healing tissues and help restore them to full use again. She took her time, making sure that Sonny understood everything that needed to be done before finally handing the release documents over for signature. The whole process was driving an impatient Jessica to distraction.

“Now you do what you’re supposed to do young lady or you’ll be back in here,” the nurse said sternly as Jess signed the papers. With a wide-faced grin on his face, Sonny picked up the small overnight bag and wrapping his arm around her shoulders, he escorted an eager Jessica out the door and down the hallway to the elevator and underground parking garage. Crockett had requisitioned a plain sedan with blacked out windows for the ride to the safe house. It was a great morning for a ride in a sports car with the top down, but taking the Barchetta would have been too risky. If anyone recognized his passenger, it could blow the whole scheme they had set up to keep her hidden from Sanchez.

When they arrived at the safe house, the officer on duty checked everything thoroughly before opening the gate and waving them through. After parking the car, Sonny opened Jessicas’s door and helped her out. For the first time in nearly two weeks, she felt the sun on her face, and it felt like heaven. She was looking around, admiring the grounds and enjoying her freedom, when Black Jack came bounding across the lawn and nuzzled up to her. Gina had brought the dog to welcome Jess back into the world after her long stay in the hospital, and he was definitely the perfect greeting to the place that would be home for the next few days. Bending down and putting her one good arm around him, she hugged him tightly before going into the house with Sonny. Jack waddled happily behind them. Now that he had his mistress back, he wasn’t about to let her out of his sight again.

Gina, and Trudy were waiting inside. They had taken the first watch along with two officers from the Bal Harbor detachment who were outside, patrolling the grounds and keeping watch on the front gate and waterway. Tiger was there too and welcomed her friend with open arms. When Gina had told her that Jessica was being released from the hospital, she had insisted on taking care of her while she was on the mend. She and Gina had stocked the house with food and had picked up some clothes and personal items from the Mountain Mist to make the house feel a bit more like home.

“Wow! This is some place,” Jessica remarked staring around wide-eyed at the luxurious surroundings. “I didn’t know Metro-Dade had this kind of money or I’d have hit them up for a bigger grant for Street Care.”

“IGG Jessica,” Trudy replied. “They’ll keep if for a while and then sell it when they can’t use it anymore. But it is nice though. Makes you wonder sometimes what you’re doing on this side of the law. Your room is upstairs, first one on the left.”

Sonny picked up her bag and followed her up the stairs. Once inside her room, he closed the door behind them and dropped the bag on a chair. Alone at last, he grasped her in a tender embrace, his lips finding hers in the passionate kiss he had been holding back since he first saw her this morning. She responded in kind, their tongues entwining and exploring each other’s warm wet recesses. Breaking free he stared longingly into her fiery blue eyes. “I missed you darlin’,” he whispered softly.

“I missed you too Sonny,” she replied leaning into his shoulder.

He wrapped her in his arms and pulled her soft warm body to his. It felt so good to hold her again, to smell the sweet scent of her hair as he twined it round his fingers. He didn’t want to leave, but he knew there was a day’s work ahead for him back at the OCB, and he knew that Gina had everything in control here.

“I gotta go darlin’,” he whispered tenderly into her ear, “but I’ll be back this evening.” He released his grasp, then added with a bit of mischief in his voice and a twinkle in his eye, “I have the night shift.”

“I’ll expect some very close, personal attention,” she responded, running her had seductively down his chest.

He smiled back at her with a devilish grin. “You can count on it.”

They finished their goodbyes and Crockett went downstairs allowing her to settle into her new surroundings. Before leaving he went over the hospital’s instructions in minute detail like a mother hen until finally Trudy picked his car keys off the table, slapped them into his hands and pushed him towards the front door.

“We can handle it Crockett. Now get going before you drive us all crazy,” she said smiling back at Gina and Tiger. She was thinking to herself how amusing Crockett was when he was love-struck - like a young school boy smitten by his first girlfriend. The wide-faced grin and the gleam in his eyes reminded her of the day when he had first told them about Caitlin. Thinking about Caitlin brought back the memories of how devastated Sonny had been when his wife had been killed. She remembered how it had torn him apart and the recollection only made her more determined that the same thing would not happen again.

It was evening by the time Crockett retuned. The guard at the gate had called the house to let them know he was coming, and Gina was waiting outside for him as he drove up. When they went inside his senses were overcome by a mouth-watering aroma coming from the kitchen.

“Don’t look at me,” Gina said when she noticed him drawing a deep breath. “Tiger’s been cooking up a storm all afternoon. Don’t know what it is, but it sure smells delicious.”

Gina and Trudy updated Sonny on the day’s events and then briefed him on the overnight schedule. The day had gone smoothly, without a hitch. The two officers on watch outside had just changed shift and the next patrol would take over in four hours, with the shift changing every four hours throughout the night. Each new shift would stop by at the house upon arrival to check in before relieving the outgoing watch, and then would check in every half hour after that by radio. Gina handed Sonny a small two-way radio and the list of officers who would be on duty overnight. None of them knew Jessica. They had been given as little information as possible but each one had photos of Sanchez and his known henchmen, and a list of people who could be allowed through the gate. Rico would be by later to relieve Sonny and keep watch inside the house for the first part of the night. Stan would be by to relieve him in the early morning.

As for Jessica, she was upstairs resting, and Tiger was in the kitchen cooking. She had appointed herself Jessica’s very protective nursemaid and personal assistant, and had taken over command as chief cook and bottle washer.

“She’s one heck of a cook Crockett,” Trudy remarked as she made her way towards the door. “If that tastes half as good as it smells, I’d say you’re in for a real treat tonight.”

After they left Crockett, went up to check on Jess. He knocked gently before opening the door quietly and peeking inside. Jessica was sleeping peacefully with Jack lying on the floor at the foot of the bed. The dog peered up when Sonny opened the door, but no amount of coaxing could make him budge from his spot. Stealing silently into the room, he pulled the covers up over her and kissed her gently on the forehead before heading downstairs to check in with Tiger and find out what smelled so delicious.

The aroma was even more scrumptious in the kitchen. With the cook was nowhere in sight, he took the opportunity to taste the wares.

“You get those paws outta there,” Tiger admonished him stomping into the kitchen. “Ain’t no one messes with my cookin’. You’ll get it when it’s good and ready. You is here to watch over my main gal, Sunshine, not steal my grub.

Softening her tone she told him to take a seat at the table and asked if he was hungry. Without waiting for answer, she brought over two cups of freshly brewed coffee and a plate of home made cookies.

“Where’d learn to cook like that,” Sonny asked sampling one of the cookies.

“Juvey Hall - one of the volunteers was a French chef. Had a great butt too. Too bad they busted him for dealing - I kinda liked him.”

She took a cookie and a sip from her coffee, and continued talking. “I was just checking on those pansies out there. The Dago Lady wouldn’t let me bring my buds in to take care of things ‘round here. They wouldn’t be pussy-footin’ ‘round like them ‘ Coco Nuts’ from the Grove out there,” she told him. You sure you can’t use some real help?”

Trying to hide a smile, he assured her that the ‘ Coco Nuts’ could do the job just fine on their own. They sat for a while chatting and Crockett asked her how she ended up on the streets of Miami . She told him that she came from a mid-size town in central Florida , small enough to have virtually no services to help out a neglected, mistreated child, but big enough that her plight went uncared for. She ran away to Miami at the age of twelve to get away from an abusive step-father who took advantage of the situation, in more ways than one, when her mother was either too stoned or too drunk to know or care what was happening, which was most of the time. She had survived on the streets doing whatever needed to be done. Prostitution was a living, drugs the only escape from the harsh realities of life. Her ‘buds’ had looked out for her in exchange for favors - sex, stealing, dealing dope, whatever. Jessica was the first person in her short life who offered friendship and kindness and a way out with no strings attached. She owed her life and soul to that lady and had vowed to never let anyone or anything hurt her.

“You just let that bastard Sanchez show up here. I’ll deal with him,” she vowed. “He don’t know just how bad life can be.”

Sonny was just about to remind her about the pitfalls of taking the law into her own hands when Jessica appeared at the doorway.

“You two - outta here,” Tiger ordered when she eyed Jess. “I gotta finish this grub and you two need some serious suck-face time. I’ll call ya when supper’s ready.”

Jessica opened her mouth to protest and found herself laughing instead. “Come on Crockett,” she said. “You heard the lady - let’s go.”

Sonny rose from the table and went over to Jess. Looking at her with a quizzical look on his face he asked under his breath, “suck face?”

“Kiss,” she answered with a smile. “You’ve been out of the real world too long.”

“I’m just here to do a job, Tiger,” he called back, sounding defensive.

“Sure, and I’m Elvis Presley,” she replied sarcastically.

He was about to respond when Jessica grabbed his arm and led him outside. “You’ll never win against her Crockett,” she said on the way out, “and besides, she’s right.”

Once outside, Jessica reached up and pulling his head towards hers, kissed him hard on the lips. Enfolding her in his arms, he responded in kind with an intensity that had been building since he had left that morning.

They were still embroiled in the throes of a passionate embrace when a voice from behind them startled them apart. “See, I told ya,” Tiger said matter-of-factly, “suck face time. I knew it. You two got it bad.”

“Ya forgot something Sunshine,” she said holding out the two-way radio he had left on the kitchen table. “ Coco Nut Number 1 just called in - everything’s fine. Number 2 should be checking in any time.” As if on cue, a voice came over the radio.

“Roberts reporting in. Nothing suspicious on the waterway,” the voice said.

Grabbing the radio from her and looking rather sheepish, he answered the check-in. After Tiger went back inside he took Jessica’s arm in his and they went for a stroll together, with Crockett making sure that they stayed out of view from the gate or the waterway. It was an idyllic setting - the sweet perfume from the hedges filled the evening air, butterflies and hummingbirds attracted by big colorful flowers flitted about and song birds chattered from perches in big shade trees. Benches, scattered seemingly at random, were placed ideally to take advantage of the gardens and shade. Whoever had landscaped the grounds had created a very secluded and exquisite paradise.

The sun was sinking low into the horizon by the time Tiger called them for supper. She had set a table for two on the patio with the soft glow of a hurricane lamp for light. The food was delectable, the ambience enchanting. It would have been Shangri-La had it not been for the regular call every thirty minutes reminding them why they were here.

It was just before ten o’clock when Tubbs showed up to take over the night watch.

“You’re early,” Crockett said, greeting him a the door, with Tiger standing close behind him.

“I had nothing better to do,” he replied handing over a small overnight bag. “Thought you might need a few things”

“For a top notch dick you sure seem to forget a lot of things Sunshine,” Tiger piped in.

Crockett was about to say something but instead just glared at her over his shoulder. She winked back at him. They went into the kitchen and sat down at the table to go over the details of the watch, ending with the fact that Jessica had just gone upstairs to bed for the night.

“So what are you doing down here?” Rico asked with a devious grin on his face. “Tiger and I have everything under control here.”

“Yeah Teletubbie and I can take over now. Gotta feed him too. Looks like he’s been eating too much of that New York chow - that stuff ain’t even fit to sniff at. Now you git upstairs there Sunshine and check on my main gal.” Tiger commanded. “There’s towels and stuff in the bathroom at the top of the stairs if you want to take a shower. Don’t want to see you ‘til morning.”

With an embarrassed grin Sonny handed over the radio to Rico, and then glared once again in Tiger’s direction before leaving the room and heading up the stairs. He grabbed a quick shower and checked in on Jessica. She was lying in bed reading a book.

“You promised me some very close and personal attention tonight Sonny Crockett. I’m waiting.”

“I never break a promise darlin’,” he said entering the room. He walked over to the bed, dropped the towel he had wrapped around him and climbed into bed.

They lay together for a while, exploring and enjoying each other’s body. She was fearful at first, worried he would find the scars ugly an distasteful. He soothed her fears, exploring her body with his hands and tongue, exciting them both with his tender ministrations. They made love gently and affectionately peaking together in mutual climax before falling back beside each other spent and exhausted. But as they lay there Jessica seemed restless. He sensed that something was wrong. When he touched her cheek he felt the wetness of tears.

“Oh God Jess, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have….”

“No,” she interrupted. “It’s not that. “I’m worried Sonny, worried about tomorrow night. I don’t trust Sanchez.” She rolled over to face away from him, not wanting him to see her the concern in her eyes. “I don’t know what it is - I just have a feeling that something’s not right.”

He moved closer and put his arm around her. “Don’t worry, darlin’. We’ve got it all worked out. Rico and Marty and half the cops in Miami are going to be there. Sanchez is going down Jess, and you’ll never have to worry about that bastard again” He moved even closer, folding into his body and kissed the back of her head. “It’s gonna be okay, I promise.”

Wrapped in the comfort of his arms, she finally dropped off to sleep. But her fears had brought back his own unsettled feelings. He was restless, tossing and turning trying to find a comfortable position that would allow him to sleep, but nothing seemed to work, and every little sound seemed to ring out like a claxon keeping him awake. Finally he dozed, but it was a fitful sleep.

He woke early in the morning rising from the bed quietly so as not wake Jessica. But she sensed his leaving and awoke. Trying to hide his sense of unease, he smiled down at her, speaking softly, “I gotta go to work sweetheart. You go back to sleep.” Before he left, he kissed her gently on the forehead. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

But she didn’t go back to sleep. She got out of bed and went to the window to watch him drive away. It was a gray overcast day. The air was still and muggy like the calm before a storm, like the feeling in the pit of her stomach. It would be a long day and night - she’d be glad when it was all over and she could say good-bye once and for all to this feeling of dread and the threat of Julio Sanchez.
