The nightmare was finally over, and it was a beautiful evening for a sail. The sun would be sinking below the horizon soon, but they had this night and one more day on the water. Tomorrow evening they had to be back in Miami for one last night together in town. Sonny had to return to work the day after that and Caitlin had to catch a plane to her next concert. But this was their time and they were going to make the most of it. They would leave what happened behind, and just enjoy the rest of what was left to them together.
It would be a little while before they reached the shelter of the Keys and found a place to moor again. Cait was cold and hungry and exhausted. She headed down to the galley to change, have a bite to eat and rest for a while. She put on some warmer clothes, grabbed a snack and a glass of wine, and looked for something to read. When she was going through the cupboards, she found a photo album. It was stuck way at the back behind some other books, and was one that Cait had never seen before. The date on the cover said 1978. This should be interesting she thought - Sonny ten years ago. She opened the book. There was a dedication inside - it had been written a short while ago, not too long before she and Sonny had met.
Dad
She started leafing through the photos. They were pictures of Sonny with Billy when he was a baby. They were beautiful. Sonny looked so happy, holding his son, playing with him. His love and affection radiated from the pages. She felt hot tears welling in her eyes. She would love to see him happy like that again. Would he want to have another child? - his job was so important to him. Was he interested in making room in his life for another little person?
This is what she had been thinking about for the past while when she was out on tour. It was what she had been contemplating talking to him about in the car after he picked her up at the airport. When she was huddled in the dark little space, fearing for her life and his, she realised more than ever, just how important he was to her. Her life was empty without him, and having a child together would make their life complete. The concerts and the fame seemed meaningless in comparison. She knew she had been slowly coming to that conclusion the more she had been away from him - the very real fear of losing him forever had only made her decide sooner.
The air was cooling down as the last of sun’s rays disappeared beneath the horizon. It wouldn’t be long before they would be back at the line of islands and looking for a place to set anchor again for the night. Now was a good time to put on those warmer clothes he had taken out what seemed like a lifetime ago. It was quiet from below. He knew Cait was tired. He wanted to check on her and make sure she was okay. He secured the wheel and went down into the cabin. Cait was sitting on the sofa, looking a book.
"Hi darlin’," he said walking over to her. He caught the glint of wetness at the corners of her eyes, and his heart went out to her. He sat down beside her and held her in his arms. "Are you okay sweetheart?" he asked in a tender voice, leaning her head onto his shoulder.
"Yeah Sonny, I’m fine. I’m just feeling good. I was just looking at these pictures of you and Billy when he was a baby. You two look so happy together."
"Those were happy times," he said smiling, remembering. "But I blew it Cait. Being a father is the most wonderful gift in the world, and I blew it. I guess I lost my chance. I only hope I can make it up to Billy from now on." He let go of her and covered his face with his hands. His mind drifted into the memories of those happy times, feeling the regret of letting them slip way.
"You could try again Crockett. We could try together."
The words took him by surprise. He loved this woman with his whole heart and soul. The only thing that could make their life perfect was a child, and he hadn’t dare ask her about it. Her career and having a family just didn’t seem to go together.
"But what about your career?"
"Careers change Sonny. I thought I’d love the touring and the fans. Before I met you it was everything, but it isn’t anymore. You’re all that matters. I love you Sonny Crockett. I want to be your wife, and I want to be the mother of your child.
"Cait." It was all he could say. He looked into her eyes. He was speechless. "I don’t know what to say."
She was disheartened. It was what she had been afraid of - that he didn’t want any complications with their current arrangements. "I know, Sonny. I know it’s not what we had in mind when we married. I just thought that maybe things might have changed, or could change." She was trying really hard to keep the disappointment from her voice. "If it’s not what you want, I understand."
"Not what I want? Cait I’ve been wanting this for so long but I was afraid to talk to you about it. I thought you weren’t interested." He was ecstatic. They joy and excitement were just starting to him hit home. "There’s nothing I could think of that I would want more." He still couldn’t believe it. "Are you serious?"
"I am. Are you?"
Holding her arms, he gazed into her beautiful blue eyes.
"I love you Caitlin Crockett."
It was the first time he had called her that, and he liked it. He had always called her Caitlin Davies before. But something had changed in their lives. He knew this was a turning point, and she did too. From now on they were truly as one, and they would build their world together. He grasped her in his arms and held her like he had never held her before, his heart overflowing with love for the woman of his dreams.
A short while later, they unfolded from each other. Two sets of eyes red from the tears of joy they had shed. He finally changed into long pants and a warmer shirt, and returned to the deck. Caitlin joined him, standing behind him as he stood at the stainless steel wheel, her arms reaching around and holding him tightly. Together they guided the boat to its resting place for the night, like they would guide the rest of their lives in harmony together. Like Caitlin had said when they first started thinking about themselves as one and what the future might hold - their life would be whatever they chose to make it.
It was dark by the time they set anchor for the night. While Sonny set about mooring the boat, Caitlin prepared a small something for them to eat. When Sonny finally showed up she had everything prepared, including the candlelight and wine. After dinner, he helped her clean away the few dishes, and then they went out on deck together. They sat on the transom at the stern of the boat, Sonny’s favourite place, and for a while they just talked. The moon was full, the wind light. The future lay ahead of them - the day’s adventure was a world behind.
Sonny reached over to hug her and to draw her to him. She grasped him in turn, and leaning into him, gently kissed the darkening bruise on his chin.
"Does it hurt much?" she asked.
"Only when you don’t kiss it," he replied with a grin.
Then he pulled her tighter to himself and kissed her. She responded in kind and the kiss took on a passion of its own. It was cooler tonight and he could feel her shivering.
"Ya wanna go inside?" he asked her softly.
"And make a baby?" she asked back.
"Sounds like a good idea to me," he responded.
They stood up and made their way together into the cabin. Sonny closed the hatch behind them to keep in the heat of the day that still remained entrenched inside. Caitlin re-lit the candles and turned out the over head light. Bathed in the warm glow, they caressed lovingly and slowly undressed each other, showering kisses upon one another while loving hands roamed freely, stimulating to greater heights their rising passion.
Slowly they made their way to the berth and lay down together, exploring the wonder of each other’s body as though it were the first time they had lain together. Tonight was not a night for wild passion. It was a night of affection and gentle caressing, the start of their new commitment to one another - a night to celebrate the wonder and excitement of their plans for the rest of their lives together. Perhaps tonight they would start the new life that would be the testament to their love for each other.
They made love tenderly and passionately, exciting each other to the peak of arousal many times over, before finally culminating their passion in the ultimate expression of their love. And when it was over, they cuddled together, safe in the arms of the person they loved most in the world, knowing the other would be there for as long as either of them lived in this world.
