Chapter 2: Escape
It seemed like forever, but finally Crockett arrived at Miami International Airport. He carefully eased the Ferrari into the parking space, its trademark prancing pony hood shield catching the setting rays of the late evening sun. After stabling the white stallion, he shut off its engine and set the parking brake.

Sonny grabbed the bouquet of flowers from the passenger seat before he got out of the car. He didn’t understand this feeling of anticipation, but he loved it. Crockett had been in many tense situations in his career - situations where his life was at stake and hanging by a thread, where the wrong word or even the wrong look could have resulted in taking a slug that would end his life. He survived because he was a master at remaining calm, cool and collected. But getting out of the car on this sultry Florida evening with the sweet scent of the white roses wafting into his senses, he found that his hands were sweating and his heart was palpitating. He felt like a schoolboy on his way to pick up his sweetheart for the first time.

Sonny’s pace was quicker than usual as he made his way down the sidewalk to the main entrance. Just outside the building he spied a white stretch limo and two black and white police cars parked nearby. He wondered who important was coming in, but it didn’t matter really - that was someone else’s worry. Caitlin was coming in incognito tonight. Her plane would be arriving just about now, and it wouldn’t be long before he was holding her in his arms again. He walked into the building, smiling from ear to ear, and headed over to an arrivals screen to find the gate where she would be disembarking. The flight number was flashing that the plane had just arrived. He couldn’t keep the excitement in - he rushed down to the gate. But when he got there, his heart fell.

The place was mowed out with fans and the press.

No one was supposed to know that born-again rock star, Caitlin Davies, was arriving home in Miami for a few days. This was supposed be two days just to themselves, a private romantic getaway, and there were reporters and cameramen all over the place. He knew now whom the limo was for and it didn’t make him happy in the least. Cait had promised that there would be no publicity, that this visit was just for the two of them. He wouldn’t have come to the airport otherwise. Exposure was exactly what he didn’t need. While the initial publicity had helped confirm his role as Sonny Burnett, drug dealer husband of Miami’s own Caitlin Davies, too much of it could hurt his undercover identity. If anyone recognised him as Sonny Crockett, cop, and passed the information on to the wrong people, it could cost him his cover, or even worse, his life. He shuffled back into the corner, hoping no one would notice him. The last thing he needed was for some reporter to spot him here.

When she finally came through the doors, he saw the look on her face change from excitement to disappointment and then to anger, and he knew this was just as much a surprise to her as it had been to him. She spied Durell, the publicist from the recording company, and headed straight over to the annoying little pest. Sonny laughed as he saw the little weasel cringe - Caitie was not one to hold her punches, as he very well knew, and she had been promised there would be no press. He was glad he wasn’t the one on the receiving end of that look and the few choice words he knew she had for him. But now the trick would be to get both of them out of here before his face was spread all over the news too.

Caitlin looked around and spied him in the shadows. The wink and look of mischief in her eyes told him she had something up her sleeve. And when he saw her whisper something to Angie, her assistant, he knew she did. Angela was Cait’s best friend and totally devoted to her - she would protect her to the ends of the earth. He should know - he had had to get past her back when he had first arrived at Cait’s house to take over his duties as bodyguard. There was no way Angie would let him get anywhere near Caitlin without proof of who he was.

"Are you satisfied?" he had asked her in frustration that first morning he showed up for the assignment as he waited for her to examine his badge in the utmost detail. She had finally opened the door, but she let him know in no uncertain terms that ‘satisfaction was a whole ‘nother thing’. After Caitlin and he had become close, her protective instincts had taken on a whole new dimension. It had taken a while, but Angie had finally come to accept him, and now she was almost as much a protector of him as she was of Cait.

Angie caught his eye and nodded her head, indicating he should keep watch down the hallway. Then she and Caitlin disappeared through the doors behind them into the first class lounge. The press clambered at the door, but it was obvious that Durell feared Caitlin’s wrath more than he feared that mob, and he kept them at bay.

Sonny kept his eyes peeled for some sort of activity in the direction Angie had indicated, and he wasn’t disappointed. A few minutes later, a petite red-headed lady wearing an over-sized jacket and a hat pulled down over her head emerged from the rear exit of the lounge. Sonny made his way unnoticed around the back of the waiting area and down the hallway as the lady approached him. When she drew near, he wrapped his arm around her and moved her as quickly as he could, without raising undo attention, towards the exit. They almost made it too before one of the reporters spotted them, and the pack turned and started racing after them. It was hell bent for leather now, but at least they had a head start. He had to think of something quick. When he spotted the uniformed officers just outside the door, he flashed his detective badge at them and ordered in his best commanding voice, "Prisoner transport. Keep those reporters back."

He dashed Cait over to the car. The gold shield had worked it’s magic, for a while at least. The officers managed to delay the reporters long enough for them to get into the car and get a good start on their way. Thank heavens for small miracles at least. Because he had parked at a meter, all they had to do was get in and drive. He headed out to the freeway and opened her up full throttle, just long enough to be sure any followers were left behind in the dust. Then he eased off on the pedal and let the engine coast back down to the speed limit.

It wasn’t the welcome home he had planned. The white roses lay strewn across the floor where he a had thrown them when they dived into the car, the red wig was askew on Caitlin’s head like a vaudeville comedienne, and his heart was racing, not with the anticipation of what the evening would bring, but with the frenzy of their escape. But then he thought, nothing about their relationship had been ordinary up until now - so why should tonight be any different. The important thing was that they were together and alone at last, and they had the next few days all to themselves to look forward to. He turned off the freeway and headed the car down towards the waterfront.

"This isn’t the way home," Caitlin said looking at him curiously.

"We’re not goin’ home darlin’," he responded with a twinkle in his eye.

"But I …." she started, but he didn’t let her finish.

"Trust me darlin’," he said in a devilish tone.

She trusted him. She trusted him with her whole heart and soul. She looked over at him and smiled. "I love you Sonny Crockett," she said with the vibrant determination that was so much part of her, and she leaned over to kiss him softly on the cheek.

"I love you too sweetheart," he replied, grinning from ear to ear.

It was heaven being with him again. Never before had she felt this way about anyone. It was everything she could do to keep from throwing herself at his body and devouring him right then and there. Hold back Caitlin, she had to keep telling herself - just a little while longer.

These last lonely weeks on the road, she had missed him so much it hurt. When he couldn’t make it to New York, she had been shattered, and she cried ‘til she felt she had no more tears to cry. But she didn’t tell him that. They had promised not to interfere with each other’s career, and there was no way she would let him know how much she was hurting because he couldn’t be there. She had wanted to sing only for him that night, and in her heart she still had, but it wasn’t the same without him there. But after her trip to Europe, she’d be back here in Miami, her first major concert in her new home town. In a little over seven weeks she would be singing her heart out for Sonny, singing like she never had before, because she would be singing just for him.

After her trip to Europe …

The trip had come up out of the blue, a last minute promotional tour for her new album, starting right after this tour ended. If it hadn’t been for the cancellations, she would have hardly had a chance to see Sonny at all before she had to leave again. There was a time when she would have revelled in the excitement of it all. A European tour - a trip home to Britain, a success story again, performing for the fans who had made her famous when she had just been starting out with Will and Rocky and Lex. Six months ago it would have been a dream come true, but that was lifetime away. She was supposed be spending that time here with Sonny, recording some new songs, the only break in a hectic concert schedule for months to come. She hadn’t told him about the trip yet, and she wasn’t looking forward to telling him about it either. She didn’t even want to think about it herself, but it just wouldn’t go away.

It’s only a few weeks Caitlin……

Yeah, that’s what Durell said, just like he said there would be no press at the airport tonight. Well if the record company thought they’d get away with another scam like that, they had another think coming. Three weeks in Europe and no more. Then she’d be on that plane on her way home for that concert in Miami and some much-needed time off. Come hell or high water, contract or no contract, she’d be here. It wasn’t the concert that she was worried about. Being home with Sonny was all that mattered.

She loved singing, and when her career started to take off again, she thought the touring would be a God-send. It would give her the chance to do something she loved and give her and Sonny some space between them now and then. But the recording company and the touring were starting to control her life, and she was beginning to find that she didn’t like working to someone else’s schedule. The more she was away from him, the more she had come to realise that Sonny Crockett was the most important thing in her life.

These last few weeks on the road had started her thinking seriously about revising her career plans, maybe even making some permanent changes in their life together. She was excited and scared at the same time. She wasn’t even sure if it was what she wanted herself right now, let alone how Sonny would feel about it. Before they married they had talked about what their life together would be like - they had covered everything. At least they thought they had. But they had really only considered what was happening in their lives at that time. She remembered telling him that their life together would be whatever they made it, but this idea of hers was something they hadn’t even thought about back then. His job was so important to him. Maybe he didn’t want this type of change in his life. She knew she had to talk to him about it, but when was the question. Until she was sure whether she should bring it up or not, it would be her secret - if she could keep it inside herself that is.

She looked over at him again, his handsome face, his long blonde hair, his sparkling eyes. She loved to see him happy like this. His smile was irresistible. As she gazed at him sitting there, concentrating on the road and the traffic, she could think of nothing but how much she loved this man.

All the way from Chicago she had dreamt of flying into his arms in a passionate embrace. When she came through the arrivals gate, she could have killed that little vermin, Durell. Once again she wondered what would she do without Angie. Her assistant had suspected that Avery and Vesika, the record company’s public relations firm, would use her trip back home to garner publicity for her upcoming concert

"You better make plans girlfriend," she had warned ,and insisted on packing a wig, hat and coat into the carry-on bags just in case.

Caitlin remembered shaking her head and laughing at the time. She refused to believe that even they would pull a stunt like that, especially when Durell had promised her so vehemently that he wouldn’t tell a soul. When she arrived and saw the mob, she could have rung his scrawny little neck. Was there anyone he didn’t tell, she wondered. There were lots of words she could think of to describe that piece of slime, and most of them would not be considered very lady-like. But Angie’s little plan had worked and they were here now - just the two of them and not a fan or a reporter in sight.

Caitlin had been unusually quiet for a while. When Sonny glanced over at her a few times, she seemed distracted and far away, and he didn’t want to disturb her thoughts. Maybe she was just tired from the flight, but he had a feeling it was more than that. Cait wasn’t one to hold things in. If she had something on her mind, he knew it would come out eventually. He glanced over once more as he shifted down to round a corner. She was looking at him and beaming again with that wonderful smile of hers.

"Love your hair sweetheart," Sonny said turning his head to look directly at her, unable to hold back the laughter. "That the latest celebrity fashion?"

She had forgotten about the wig. She pulled down the visor to look in the mirror, and had a hard time holding back her own laughter.

"The very latest you know - they call it the ‘Angie’ look," she managed to get out in a serious tone. "Very fashionable in Paris these days, I’m told. How would you like to try it out Crockett?" she asked in that devilish tone of hers.

She took the wig and plastered it onto his head and pulled down his visor so he could take a look.

"Naw," he responded in a tone just as serious as hers had been. Shaking his head, he continued. "Clashes with my underwear."

"Oh, you’ve got underwear on do ya?" she asked teasingly. "Let’s take a look see."

She reached over and undid the button on his pants.

"I’m drivin’ Caitlin!" he exclaimed in surprise as he squirmed under her touch. "Take it easy darlin’- we’ll be there soon."

"Not soon enough," she said with the devil in her eyes. She moved her hands, but leaned over and laid her head down on his shoulder. "Okay Crockett, but when we get there, you’re all mine."

"Anything you say darlin’. I’m all yours."

They were nearing the marina now. "So what am I supposed to do for clothes Crockett?’ she asked him, sitting up in the seat, a bit more serious this time.

"Don’t worry sweetheart. Everything we need’s on the boat and ready to go - food, wine, candles, romantic music." It was his turn to look at her with a cheesy grin. "What makes you think you’re gonna need any clothes for the next few days anyway?"

"Oh, I was just thinking that maybe some pirates might try to hijack us or somethin’, and I wouldn’t want them to see me naked."

"Caitlin, my love, believe it or not, I thought of everything. I even threw some clothes in for you, just in case those pirates show up - no way I’m sharing that gorgeous body of yours with anyone else."

They were at the marina now. He eased the car through to the owner’s parking area, and pulled into his usual spot. No sooner did he have the ignition off than she had her arms wrapped ‘round him in a tight embrace. He returned the embrace with equal force, planting his lips firmly on hers, his tongue exploring the juices of her mouth. He moved to her ear, his heavy breathing driving her wild with excitement. "Oh God Sonny, I missed you so much!"

His hands moved up inside her blouse feeling the silky smoothness of her skin. Her hands in return made their way to his pants to finish the job they had started earlier. He couldn’t get enough of her - he wanted her right then and there. His lips continued to explore her neck and shoulders, the seductive musky smell of her body driving him wild. His hands reached up to undo her bra and release her tender sweet breasts into his hungry mouth.

"Ah Mr. Burnett." Somewhere behind him, he thought he heard a voice at the window and felt a poke on his shoulder.

"Ahhh Sonny?" The voice was louder this time, the poke a bit harder.

He couldn’t believe it! Who the hell was this?

"Sonny," the grizzled old voice said, a bit louder still. "There’s a TV van just pullin’ in. Ya want I should get rid of ‘em. Kinda fig’red you and the missus might want a bit o’ privacy." It was Will the caretaker and chief cook and bottle washer at the marina.

"Thanks Will," Sonny replied quickly covering himself with his hands. "Keep ‘em away as long as you can."

"Damn reporters," Sonny muttered to no one in particular as he stretched out his legs and did up the button his pants.

The old man winked a knowing smile and then turned around and headed off towards the van. "Newlyweds," he muttered to himself, shaking his head and laughing. Will was a character for sure, but he was a good man and a trusted friend.

They pulled themselves together as quickly as they could and hopped out of the car. As they ran down the wharf, Sonny turned back and pitched the keys to the old man calling out to him. "Lock her up for me, will ya Will, and take good care of Elvis. We’ll be back in a few days. Elvis was Sonny's pet alligator, a throwback to his university football days. As much as he cared for the cantankerous old reptile, there was no room for Elvis on this trip.

‘Sure thing Sonny," he called back, "I’ll look after everyt’ing fer ya. Elvis ‘n me is good mates." He continued towards the van, still shaking his head and chuckling under his breath. "Bet that boat’ll be rockin’ tonight. Hee hee hee."

They dashed down the dock. When they reached the sailboat, they each took a hand casting off the lines and then hopped on board. Sonny pushed her off and after starting the navigation engines, he eased the sleek 40 foot sloop out of her resting place and guided her carefully through the marina. They were just heading out into the Intracoastal Waterway as the TV crew arrived on the dock.

They had escaped - freedom at last! Three nights and two days of nothing but themselves and the ocean and whatever they wanted to do.
