Chapter 15

Senator Daniel Bernstein was arrested for conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder of Lieutenant Martin Castillo. If convicted, which was likely with the evidence, he could face life in prison. The anti-gun bill he wrote would not even be brought to the Senate to be heard. With all the publicity of the Bernstein's arrest, the Democrats on Capitol Hill would not try to pass another gun bill for some time since one of them had tried to commit murder to pass his own bill. Most of them tried to distance their relationship with him to avoid the political flak.

Sonny, Rico, Switek, Trudy, Gina, and Castillo watched the news report of the arrest on the television in Castillo's hospital room. For all of them, the arrest of Bernstein was the end of a long quest for revenge. For Sonny, it was an end he looked forward to. He wanted to go back to his fishing charter on New Orleans. This life as a cop, in Miami was as distasteful as when he and Rico left the department eleven years ago. Sure, it was nice to see all the people he knew and drive the fast cars and boats, but to him, it was like a drug that he was addicted to and he had to get rid of it. However it was all worth it because of Castillo. There were so many times that Marty had looked out and protected him he thought it was the least he could do. He didn't think about the fact that he might fall into his Burnett alter ego again, he just did it, for his friend.

"Well, what do you guys think," Trudy asked out to no one in particular. "Do you think he'll cop a plea."

"He has to," Rico replied. "What alternative is there? Spend the rest of his life in prison?"

"He's a politician Rico," Sonny said rubbing the stubble on his chin. "He'll find some way to weasel his way out of it."

Stan nodded. "Well whatever he does, I guess you could say that his days in politics are over."

"You got that right Stan," Gina added. "Come to think I voted for that guy." The room filled with soft laughter from the entire crew.

The door knocked and opened. It was Joey Hardin and Zack Andrews. Zack was wearing a sling on his arm.

"Hey, how you guys doing," Stan asked. "How's the arm feel Zack?"

"Feels like a bitch Sarge," Andrews replied. "But I'll live."

"Great," Sonny said. "Glad to see you're ok kid."

Castillo cleared his throat which got the attention of everyone. "Sonny, Rico, and the rest of you. I want to thank you all for coming back here to help me. I know that I've never believed in revenge or payback but seeing you, all risking you careers and lives, really touched me. Thank you."

"Anytime Marty," Sonny said. "Anytime."

"So are you getting excited about getting back to work?" Rico asked.

"No," Martin replied. "I'm not. I've decided to retire."

"What?" the entire crew said.

Martin nodded. "It's time now. Actually I've been thinking about it for awhile and now with this, I've made up my mind. All I've been doing since I was a young man was work. It's about time that I start a new life. Start to take care of myself."

"Amen," Sonny said. "It's about time Marty."

"So what are you going to do now?" Rico asked.

"Don't know yet but I'll figure it out."

Sonny had an idea. "Hey, maybe you could work with me with my fishing charter? I can teach you the ropes."

Martin smiled. "Thanks Sonny. I'll think about it. When are you two leaving?"

"Tomorrow," Sonny replied. "We've already got our tickets to go back."

"Have you thought about seeing May-Ying?" Trudy asked. She and Gina always seemed to worry about his love life.

Martin smiled a bit embarrased. "Yeah, I have thought about seeing her again."

"Well what are you waiting for?" Rico asked. "Go see her!" The whole crew agreed.

"So wait a minute," Joey interrupted. Who's gonna take your place sir?"

"I talked to Captain Cutter this morning, and I have already made a recommendation," Castillo said as he turned to Switek.

Stan looked surprised. "Who.... me?"

Martin nodded. "Yep. Cutter has already approved it. The position's yours if you want it."

Stan was touched. He took Martin's hand and shook it. "Thank you sir. You don't know what this means to me. Wait until Tessa finds out." Everyone congratulated Stan with pats on the back and handshakes.

The door opened just then. It was a nurse with a wheelchair. "Ok, Mr. Castillo, you've been discharged. I'm here to wheel you out."

"Thank you nurse," Castillo replied. "But I think I'll walk out on this one." Martin was about to get out of the bed when he realized that he wasn't dressed. "Um, could you excuse me please?" The entire crew chuckled.

"Sure Marty," Sonny said with a smile. "No problem. Let's go guys. We'll be waiting outside."

"Yeah, let's go out and celebrate. My treat," the new Lieutenant said.

"We're there," Gina and Trudy said. "Let's go!"

Miami Airport,

The next morning,

The entire Vice crew were at the gate to see Sonny and Rico one last time before they left for home. It was a sad moment for everyone. They would not see each other for a long time. Sonny and Rico hugged and said good bye to everyone. Afterwards, they picked up their bags and went through the gate. Rico's flight was leaving in fifteen minutes while Sonny's wouldn't leave for another forty five minutes.

Sonny took a long look at Rico. It stuck him as kind of odd. It took a major event such as this to bring them back together. He didn't want another six years to pass by and not see each other. "Rico, I'm gonna miss you man."

Rico smiled with tears in his eyes. "I'm gonna miss you too Sonny."

"Let's not wait six years to see each other and not like this man. Say, why don't you come down to New Orleans and we'll go on a long fishing trip. Just you and me."

Rico nodded. "Yeah, that sounds like fun. I'll give you a call when I get everything squared away in New York."

"Sounds good. Bye Rico."

"Bye Sonny."

The two embraced but it was different this time. They would see each other again. Sonny watched as Rico picked up his bag and walked toward his plane. Tears welled up in his eyes. It was almost like deja vu when eleven years ago he said good-bye to his partner as he left for the airport. He began to think of all the good times and the bad times he shared with Rico and he began to smile. He knew that this wouldn't be the end. The good days were still ahead...

A few weeks later

San Francisco

The taxi pulled over to the curb in front of the house. Castillo look at the home from the passenger seat. This is it, 224 Wilshire, he thought. It was the home of May-Ying. He gave the driver the money, with a generous tip, pick up his bag and a bouquet of roses, and got out of the taxi He stood at the front of the lawn for a moment as the taxi pulled away. He had waited for this moment for a long time. He took a deep breath and relief filled his body as he inhaled the salty air.

So this is what it's like to be retired huh? As he approached the house, he began to wonder about May-Ying. He wondered what she had done all these years since he last saw her. The last time he saw her, she was in trouble with her husband. She divorced him shortly after when he was arrested for smuggling but after that, Castillo had lost track of her. She did write to him once to tell him that she had moved to San Francisco and that he should visit her when he had some free time. So here he was with all the time in the world. All for her.

His heart began to race as he got closer to the door. He wondered if May-Ying had been waiting for him all this time or if she had found love again. He figured if she had, he would be genuinely happy for her. For now, all he wanted to do now was to look into her beautiful brown eyes, hold her petite body next to his, and run his hands through her long, dark hair. He wanted to melt into her soul and be one with her. When he got to the door, he took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and rang the doorbell. Oh May-Ying, I'm here. I finally made it.

Gulf of Mexico, 20 miles from New Orleans

"Hey Sonny," yelled Rico from the lower deck of the Catilin Davies. "You want a beer?"

"Yeah sure, why not?" answered Sonny as he threw his line out to the ocean.

Rico came out onto the deck and sat next to Sonny and gave him a beer. They opened up their bottles and gave a toast.

"To Castillo," Sonny said.

Rico smiled. "To Castillo. So what do you think partner? You think Marty's gonna go see May-Ying again?"

Sonny winked at his partner. "Do fish swim?"

Rico laughed. "Yeah he probably has already!"

Sonny laughed and looked out to the ocean. The sky was blue, the weather was warm, the beer was nice and cold, and he was in his boat, fishing with his best friend. What more could a guy ask for? He looked over at his Rico and notice that something was troubling him. "What's wrong?" he asked.

"I can't stop thinking about him," Rico answered, still staring off to the ocean.

"Can't stop thinking of who?"

Rico looked at Sonny. "McGurn, Senator Bernstein. When we pulled Bernstein into the boat and he began to talk about his son, for some reason, it really got to me. It's not what he said, it's how he said it. He was really convinced that killing all those kids at the hospital would avenge his son's death. I keep thinking, if it were my son, would I have reacted the same?"

Sonny nodded as he rubbed the stubble on his chin. "Yeah, I know whatcha mean Rico but no matter what happened to the kid, what he did was wrong. I dunno, maybe he used his son's death to pass that bill and maybe McGurn was in it for the killing or the money or who the Hell knows. It makes me sick sometimes." He threw up his hands in disgust. "It's these politicians, they think that they can make the world safe by passing more laws. I dunno, it's all so complicated."

Rico nodded in agreement, but somewhere deep down, he could understand why someone would do that, but Sonny was right. It was wrong.

"So anything exciting happening at the bank?" Sonny asked, changing the subject.

"No," Rico replied. "I already quit."

"What?"

"Yeah I quit. Since we left vice, I've feeling like a part of me was dead. Being back in action again brought it back to life again. I was thinking of starting my own private detective service when I get back to the Bronx."

Sonny laughed. "You? A private dick? I don't think I can imagine that. Well I know that you'll be a good one. Give 'em Hell Rico."

"Why don't you join me Sonny? You and me together again. It'll be like old times."

Sonny thought about it for a moment. "No Rico, I'm through with that life. The crime, grime, and slime, I can't go back to that life again. You know?"

Rico nodded. He kind of knew that Sonny would refuse that offer. Sonny had gone through his own private Hell to get out. It had cost him dearly. Two wives - one divorced, the other killed, a child who grew up with out him. It had almost claimed his sanity when he fell into his Burnett alter ego.

"But if you ever need me," Sonny added as he put his arm around him. "Give me a call. I'll be there for you partner, ok?"

Rico smiled. "Ok. Thanks Sonny. And I'll be there for you. Always."

Rico and Sonny looked out towards the ocean and both felt the deep connection that they shared. Both were silent, not saying a word. They knew that they would continue their friendship for as long as they lived. No matter where either of them were, they would be there for each other. Their relationship was beyond friendship, beyond family. They were partners - partners forever.

"Hey Tubbs," Sonny said breaking the long silence. "You ever consider a career in deep sea fishing?"

Rico smiled. "Maybe..."

Maybe...
