Chapter 15
Switek, Trudy, Gina, Crockett, and Tubbs sat in the Lieutenant's office at OCB. They were angry, upset, and disappointed at the fact that the deal went sour. Even more disappointing, they didn't get McGurn and another police officer was killed at the expense of their failure.
"Goddammit," barked Switek. "Who could have told McGurn that you were cops!?" Stan looked out of the window and saw all the vice officers doing their daily duties. His mind began to wander, wondering if one of his officers was the leak and also, if there was a leak, why? Was it for money? Was he or she a sympathizer for McGurn and his ideals? Was it blackmail?
"Could have been anyone of them," said Rico. "The question is what are we going to do about it?"
"Find 'em and nail 'em," mumbled Switek. He looked at his former partners. "You guys are the only ones I trust. The only people knew about the bust are in the next room. We gotta find the person who leak the info. If we don't. we're screwed." The phone rang and the Sergeant picked it up. "Vice Switek speaking. Yes, Dr. Wong. What!?" A big smile appeared on Stan's face. "That's great! Is he conscious? Oh, thank God! That's great news! Thank you Doctor."
"Is the Lieutenant ok?" asked Gina.
"Damned right he is," said Stan. "He pulled through!" Everyone sighed in relief. Rico and Gina crossed themselves. Sonny clenched his fist in triumph. Stan opened the door and announced to the whole department that Castillo was going to pull through. The entire room filled with cheers and applause.
"That's great Stan!" exclaimed Sonny. "Well what the hell are we sitting around here for? Let's go to the hospital!!!"
"I'm down with that partner," Rico cheered. "Let's go!"
McGurn clicked the selector switch on his M-4 carbine from safe to automatic. The rest of the men were lined up behind him, ready to go. They gave him a thumbs up. Carl gave the signal and opened the wooden door simulating the front door of the children's hospital. They sprinted through the door one at a time, engaging dressed up mannequins simulating the guards and hospital personnel. The men swept through each room shooting at the "children" which were simulated by dolls and large stuffed animals lying in each bed.
When all the rooms were cleared, he gave the signal to evacuate. The men scrambled back out the front door where a van containing a driver and Clint Davidson manning a SAW machine gun mounted on the back was waiting for them.
"All right, that's it," McGurn said. He glanced down at his stop watch. They cleared the entire level in less than a minute. Good. The second floor was a little slower. He guessed that the stairs and a few other obstacles slowed them down a bit but with a few more runs they would have it down pat. He also noticed that the men also left a few of the victims alive or wounded. That was good too since he was under strict instructions from Francis to leave a few of them alive. McGurn didn't really see the logic in that however Francis was very specific about that. His mind began to wander about what Francis' motives really were. He wanted him to sell guns and then this hit on a children's hospital of all places. It didn't make sense.
"How did we do sir?" one of his men asked.
"We were too slow getting to that second floor! We'll run it through again and again until we get it right got it?"
"Yes sir!" his men shouted.
Jerry Block approached McGurn coming out of his hide, which was in a building behind the simulated hospital. "Are you sure one sniper will be enough sir? I mean I can only cover so much ground."
McGurn though about that but he went through what he knew. The strike would take place on a Sunday morning. The cops was not aware of their plans so that by the time they would be finished, the damage would be done and their reaction time was too slow and if they did arrive before the Delta Five left, the resistance would be minimal. Plus, they were better armed than the cops who had only pistols or maybe a shotgun which couldn't penetrate the body armor they would be wearing. They would be armed with long guns, M-16's and AK-47's and Block's Remington 700 rifle for high ground cover. If fact, he remembered the Francis also wanted the Delta Five to use "assault weapons" as he called them. He thought that was unusual. Most people wouldn't have care what weapon he used as long as the job got done.
"No Jerry," replied McGurn. "I think we got enough coverage."
"Ok, sir if you say so."
"Good, now let's set it up again." They had time to get it right until Sunday morning.
Sonny, Rico, Stan, Gina, and Trudy quietly entered the hospital room where Castillo was sleeping peacefully in the bed. They all surrounded him looking at him. They were all happy and relieved that he would live through it. Sonny remember once when he had gotten shot on duty and the whole crew came to his side support him but being on the other side of it and seeing his friend and mentor lying in the bed was eerie. It was almost like deja vu.
Castillo's eyes began to flicker and then open. He looked around and saw some figures standing around him. His eyes began to focus and he saw familiar faces from the past. "Crockett? Tubbs? Gina. Trudy."
"It's us Marty," Sonny whispered. "We're all here."
"It's good to see all of you after all these years," Castillo said. "How did you hear about me?"
"Oh just heard on the news," Rico said. "So we came here to help out with the investigation."
"That's right," Trudy said. "We're not just gonna let you lie here while that punk runs free."
Gina nodded in agreement. "Yeah, all the times you went to bat for us, it was time we went to bat for you."
In a strange way, Castillo was actually touched by that. Even though he didn't believe in revenge, he was touched. His friends and former coworkers, and come thousands of miles and put their lives in harms way to help him. He managed to smile. "Thank you. So did you get him?"
"Not yet sir," Switek explained. "Sonny and Rico set up a deal with him but he knew they were cops. It was a trap." Stan looked down in disappointment. "And we lost an officer in the process. I think we've got a leak but I don't know who yet."
"I know you'll find him Stan," Castillo whispered. "You can do it."
"But sir I....."
"No Stan you can do it. Just believe in yourself and your experience and you have a lot of fine officers working for you. Captain Cutter called earlier and said that despite the setbacks, you've handled command well."
Switek managed to smile. "Thank you sir."
"So what's your next move Stan," asked Castillo.
"Well, we have to find that leak. We have to go through each officer that knew about the bust and press 'em hard. Also, word's out on the street that McGurn is planning something big. We don't know what it is yet. Sonny, Rico, see if you can talk to Izzy and see what he knows. Gina, Trudy, I'll need some help trying to find this leak."
"Got it Stan," Sonny and Rico replied.
"You guys got a job to do now," said Martin. "Go. I'll be fine here. Just get the job done." Everyone nodded and began to leave.
"We're glad you're ok Marty," Trudy and Gina said as they kissed the Lieutenant on the forehead.
"We'll see you soon," said Sonny and Rico as they left.
"Don't worry sir," Stan said confidently. "We'll get him."
Soon, the group had left and Martin was alone in his hospital bed. He began to think of his friends and what they were risking trying to help him. Please God, let them be safe. They're all good people. Don't let anything happen to them, he thought to himself as tears began to roll down his cheeks.
