Chapter 9

Senator Bernstein always like working with children. If he wasn't a senator he would have probably chosen to become a teacher, preferably kindergarten but no, he would have to save the children by being a senator. So he always enjoyed visiting orphanages or children's hospitals, in this case St. Mary's Childrens' Hospital in Miami. Even though it saddened him to see sick little children, it put a smile on his face to see them happy when he visited them. It also got him some good publicity too and the media was here in full force since it was an election year and all. Coverage like this would get him re-elected in November. It made the public see that he cared for all the children in the country and made sure that they were safe from drugs, gangs, and guns. Especially those awful guns. He wondered what it would take to get America to wake up and realize that guns were a danger to us all. None of his past tactics had worked. It would take something big to wake them up. Something huge.

A woman approached him. It was Janice Felder, head of the hospital. "Senator Bernstein," she said as she extended her hand. "Thank you so much for showing up. It's always comforting to know that people like you support government funding for children hospitals such as St. Mary's."

"Why it's a pleasure," the Senator said shaking her hand. "Anything for the kids. So I hear we're going to have a full day here."

"Oh yes. We're expecting a whole bunch of celebrities dropping by. In fact I believe one is already here."

"She's here!" one little girl screamed.

"It's her!" another gasped.

The Senator turned around and saw a small Asian woman standing there carrying a large plastic bag full of gifts for the children. It took him only a second to realize that standing there was none other than Michelle Kwan, the figure skater. The group of children surrounded her jumping up and down with excitement.

"Look what I have for you guys," Michelle said as she began to pull out stuffed animals out of the bag. The children cheered and jumped with joy as she began to pass them out like Santa Claus on Christmas. It practically was Christmas for most of them.

"Could I have your autograph Michelle?" asked a little girl.

"Sure," she said as she took the piece of paper and scribbled on it.

The Senator approached her. She was actually quite lovely. She was petite, muscular, and elegant all in one little package. He had watched her win the world championship on TV with his wife a few months ago. He extended his hand. "Ms. Kwan, congratulations on your fourth world championship. You're an inspiration to us all with your strength and courage."

"Oh, thank you so much," she said as she blushed.

"This is so nice of you to give away these stuffed animals to the kids."

"Oh it's nothing really. I get these at competitions and performances throughout the year. I can't keep them so I give 'em all to the kids."

"Um, this is kinda embarrassing but my wife is a big fan of yours. Could you sign this for her?" the Senator pleaded showing her a copy of her autobiography book.

"Oh sure. It would be my pleasure," she said as she opened it up and signed it.

"Thank you very much," he said. He turned to Ms. Felder. "I'm sorry I wish I could stay longer but I have some other business to attend to."

"Oh, of course. I understand. Thank you for attending," Ms. Felder said shaking the Senator's hand.

"Thank you Ms. Felder." He turned to Michelle. "It was a pleasure meeting you Ms. Kwan and thank you for the autograph."

She smiled. "You're welcome."

The Senator walked out of the building and got into his limo. He instructed the driver to head back to his home. His thoughts lingered on his new anti-gun bill. He went through it in his head. What's it going to take for the people to realize that these weapons of mass destruction need to be destroyed, he thought. The public demanded more gun control after the Columbine massacre. However, nothing has been done. Would there have to be another massacre to wake up America? Another massacre.... Say at a children's hospital? Yes. That will be the place. Yes a few children will have to be sacrificed for the good of all the children but that can't be helped. This St. Mary's will be an excellent choice. At that moment, his mind was set. He figured he had to make a few phone calls on his private cell phone. We're almost there Francis. Soon you will be avenged my son.

Sonny and Rico arrived at OCB. Switek was waiting for them.

"Ok guys. Tell me whatcha got?" Switek said.

"We made a deal Stan," Rico said. "A whole cache of military weapons. The deal goes down in a few days. We'll need $250,000 cash on this one."

"Whew," Stan exhaled. "That's quite a chunk of cash but I think I can manage to get it. Don't worry, I'll take care of it."

"Great," said Crockett. He looked around. "Where's Gina and Trudy?"

"Getting a little anxious there Romeo?" Stan teased. He knew Sonny wanted to catch up with Gina. "There out waking the streets if you know what I mean. Words out on the street that something big is going down soon and McGurn is at the center of it. When they get back lets all get together for dinner tonight and plan this out. My treat guys."

"Sounds good," Rico said.

"Alright. Now let's see if I can cough up the money from the Captain," Switek said as he left the Lieutenant's office.

Sonny smiled as he saw Stan walk away. "He's sure changed for the better eh Rico?"

"Yeah he sure has Sonny."

Senator Bernstein arrived at his home in Ft. Lauderdale. He saw his wife, Gale, and gave her the autographed book. She smiled and gave him a hug. He then went to his private office where he locked the door to make sure his wife wouldn't come in unexpectedly. He opened his briefcase where his private cell phone was inside. Nobody knew he had it, not even his wife. He turned the phone on and pressed a few of the buttons.

"McGurn here."

"McGurn, this is Francis. I have the target."

"It's about time. What is it?"

"St. Mary's Children's hospital in Miami."

McGurn paused a bit. Christ, a children's hospital? He thought. It struck him as odd that a place where sick kids are would be a target. He figured something bigger but a job was a job. He had no problem with killing kids. "Very well. I'll need to see a blueprint of the place. Plus some maps of the nearby area might be nice."

"You'll have them before the end of the day. By the way when's that sale you talked about earlier?"

"On Friday. The two buyers seem to check out."

"Really? Who are they?"

"Oh just some drug dealers. By the looks of it they've been in the business a long time. I got pictures of them if you want to take a look."

"Sure, fax them through," Bernstein said as he turned on his fax machine.

"Standby." McGurn placed the photos of Burnett and Cooper through the fax machine.

On the other end Bernstein examined the photos. His eyes widened when he saw the buyers. "McGurn, they're cops!"

"What!?"

"Yup they're cops. Their real names are Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. They were former vice cops. They served under the Lieutenant that was shot during the last deal and they want to put you behind bars."

"Is that so? Well I guess I'll have a little surprise for those bastards on Friday. Do you have files on them?"

"I'll see what I can do. We'll talk later on the hospital. For now, eliminate Crockett and Tubbs. We can't afford to have them screw up our plans."

"Agreed. McGurn out." He hung up. Son of a bitch, McGurn thought. I trusted those bastards. I'll make them pay. He immediately dialed Burnett's number.

"Burnett," said the other line.

"Burnett, this is McGurn. I have the merchandise you ordered. You free on Friday?"

"Absolutely Carl. So where do we meet?"

"Well, there's this little building right outside of Miami." It took McGurn a few minutes to explain how to get there.

"Alright," Sonny said. "Sounds like a plan. So Friday at noon then?"

"Right. See you then."
