Chapter 15
"You want me to reinstate who?" asked Captain Cutter.
"Crockett and Tubbs sir," answered Switek.
"Not James Sonny Crockett?" Cutter asked. Switek nodded his head. Cutter hadn't heard that name in a long time. He and Crockett went way back. He remembered Sonny when he was still a young pup in Vice and he was still with the DEA. One particular Sunday night, the both of them went on a drug raid and Cutter had screwed up. Crockett getting shot, was the price for his mistake. He carried that guilt for years. He tried to apologize to Sonny numerous times but to no avail. Crockett would not even see him after that. Fifteen years later when he was head of the Youth Crime Unit, they met again where Crockett's wrotégé', a young Joey Hardin, was recruited for a special case. He could still see that Crockett held a grudge. He wondered if Sonny still did after all these years. Probably so if he knew him well enough, and he did. When Crockett and Tubbs went after General Borbon and quit the force, he thought that he had heard the last of them but here they were, ready to put their lives on the line for a friend. He guessed that he would do the same thing. He decided he let them back for awhile just this once. It's the least he could do for Sonny after what he did. "Where are they now?"
"Right outside," Switek answered.
"All right. Let me see them." Switek opened the door and Crockett and Tubbs walked in. Immediately, Cutter saw Sonny's face darken when he saw him. Some things never change, he thought. "Well you two, it's been awhile."
"Cut the crap Cutter," Sonny interrupted. "We want back in. We'll find that McGurn and put him where he belongs."
Control yourself Paul, Cutter thought. "I know you and Castillo were tight. I guess I'd do the same for a friend and besides, I owe you one Crockett." Crockett just rolled his eyes. "Switek, make sure they fill out all the appropriate forms and all the paperwork." He opened his file cabinet. "Here are your badges. You guys remember the drill, so do what you gotta do to get the job done."
"Thanks Cutter," said Tubbs. Crockett just grunted as they left Cutter's office.
Same old Crockett, Cutter said to himself as a huge grin appeared on his face.
Switek led Sonny and Rico into the vice office room. The room mostly hadn't changed except for the people and some of the computers that weren't there before. Sonny and Rico looked at the old desks. They were now occupied by Joey Hardin and Zack Andrews. Joey spotted Crockett and a crooked grin appeared on his face. He knew why he and Rico were here.
"All right boys and girls," Switek said loudly. "Can I have your attention. This here is Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. As of today they are assigned to Vice and are going to help out with the McGurn case. Let's all welcome them." Everyone in the office grunted and waved "hi". Sonny and Rico suddenly felt like new kids being introduced to a new classroom. "Alrightie then, we'll have a briefing in the briefing room in ten minutes." The officers continued their work.
"Crockett!" yelled out Hardin.
"Hey kid," exclaimed Sonny as he shook hands with his old protégé'. "You're lookin' good."
"And uh," Joey said as he examined his growing belly. "Have you been eating too many doughnuts?" Rico laughed.
"Aww come on man," whined Sonny as he smiled. "Hey you remember Rico don't ya?"
"Yes how could I forget man," Joey said as he shook Rico's hand. "Good to see you again Rico. This is my partner Zack Andrews. We met when I was on the Youth Crime Unit and we've been partners ever since."
"Nice to meet you," said Rico as they all exchange handshakes.
"So you guys are here on the McGurn case eh?" asked Zack.
"Damned right," Crockett said. "Rico and I served under Castillo and now we want to put that bastard behind bars."
"Well join the club guys," Zack said. "That's why we're all here pal."
"Stan!" a female voice yelled out. Crockett saw two women whisk behind him. Their backs were to him but they looked familiar.
Gina? Trudy? He looked over to his partner and he could tell he was thinking the same thing.
"Trudy, Gina," Stan said. "Well it's been a long time."
"We heard about Castillo," Gina said. "We're here to help."
Switek looked at Crockett and Tubbs. "If it were me laid up in the hospital, would I get all this attention?"
Trudy and Gina looked behind them and spotted their old partners. It was if they had saw a ghost.
"Sonny?" asked Gina.
"Rico?" asked Trudy.
"It's us!" Crockett and Tubbs cheered. Both women approached and embraced them. Crockett took a long look at Trudy and Gina. Trudy looked great but Gina. She looked absolutely gorgeous. She looked even better than when she last saw her.
"Gina, Trudy, you guys haven't changed a bit. What have you two been up to after all these years?" asked Sonny.
"Well, I'm in public relations now," Gina answered.
"Public relations?" Sonny exclaimed. He looked at her left hand and saw a big diamond ring on her finger. Gina noticed Sonny looking.
"Yeah I'm married," said Gina. "I also have a little boy, Carlos. He's six."
"Trudy, what have you been up to?" asked Rico.
"Well I'm in charge of robbery now. I've been there for about nine years. So what have you two been up to? We haven't seen you guys in a long time."
The four of them reminisced for a few minutes when Switek called everyone into the conference room. Crockett and Tubbs sat down next to Trudy and Gina. It was like old times again. It was like an old pair of shoes that fit just right.
"Ok boys and girls, now for the meat and potatoes," said Stan after a fifteen minutes of the meeting. "What do we have on the McGurn case?"
"Well we've got no leads, but since all the guns previously stolen were from military storehouses, we've alerted all warehouses in the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale areas," said Hardin.
"Excellent. Joey and Zack, I want you two to alert gun stores and police armories as well. I don't want to take any chances with this guy. Hell, alert all of those in the entire state. Understood?"
"Yes sir," Joey and Zack replied.
Wow, he's changed for the better, Crockett thought to himself. He thought back to when he first met Switek. He was a first class, clumsy, slob. He was a good man but a slob. He called him and Larry Laurel and Hardy. They were the clowns of the unit. When Larry was killed in action, Switek had changed for the worst. He became involved with gambling and drinking. It had affected his job. But now he was in charge. There was a certain power in his voice when he gave commands. He was confident, sure of himself. All the qualities that a leader should have. He noticed the ring on his finger. That may have been part of the reason for the change.
"Trudy, Gina, check out this area here and see if there's any word on McGurn," Switek commanded as he pointed on the map.
"Yes sir," Trudy and Gina said with a playful salute.
"Sonny, Rico any ideas?" Switek asked.
"We were thinking about talkin' to Izzy for some info," Rico said. Sonny nodded.
"All right. Good enough," Switek said. "Any questions?" The room was silent. "All right boys and girls that's it. Get out there and stay safe." The room cleared out within seconds. "Sonny, Rico, you guys come with me."
"Where we going?" Sonny asked.
The police armory looked bigger and cleaner than before. Stan led Sonny and Rico up to the front desk where Sergeant Lee ran the entire show.
"Switek, good to see ya man. Who are your friends?" Lee asked.
"These are two of the best cops I've ever worked with. Sarge, this is Sonny Crockett and this is Ricardo Tubbs. Guys, this is Sergeant Lee. He's in charge of the armory." They exchanged handshakes.
"What can I do for you guys?" Lee asked.
"Well I need you to give these guys some guns," Switek said.
"I dunno," Lee said jokingly as he squinted his almond shaped eyes. "These guys look a little dangerous."
You have no idea, Switek thought. "Well, I think they're ok," he said with a wink.
"Ok," Lee said. "What would you guys like?"
"How about a .38 special Smith and Wesson chief special and a 12 gauge, an Ithica 37 if you got one," Rico said.
"Sure, I think I got those," Lee said as he disappeared into the back room. He came out a few minutes later he came out with the requested items and some ammo for each. "And what about you Crockett?"
Christ, I haven't shot a gun since I left, Crockett thought. "Got anything in 10mm? I usually carry it in a shoulder holster and a backup in an ankle holster."
Lee thought about it for a moment. "I got just the thing for you." He disappeared again and came out with two pistols.
"What's this?" Crockett asked.
"It's a Glock 20, 10mm. Fifteen rounds in the mag. It's a great pistol. Here's a shoulder holster for ya'." He handed him a Galco shoulder holster. It was an improved model from the one he carried before. "And here's the ankle holster you asked for and I think you'll like this." He handed Sonny another pistol. It looked the same as the Glock but it was a lot smaller. "That's a Glock 29 also in 10mm. Holds 10 in the magazine. Nice little weapon for a backup and it can use the model 20 mags too."
Crockett picked up the pistols. They were so light due to the plastic receiver. He pulled back the slide to check if the chamber was empty and pulled the trigger. It was very nice. Much better than the Smith and Wesson 4506 he carried although he would have to get used to using a "plastic" gun. "Got any ammo for these or do I just pull this out and say 'Freeze'?"
"Ah yes," Lee said as he pulled out a box of ammunition. It was a box of CorBon 165 gr. jacketed hollow points.
Crockett and Tubbs took a few minutes to load up their guns and put them away in their holsters.
"Ok you two," Switek said. "I got a surprise for you."
"What is it?" Crockett asked.
"Follow me," Stan said as he led them out of the armory. They walked outside towards a large warehouse. Stan unlocked and opened the door and turned on the light. Crockett and Tubbs could see an array of junk lying around, mostly old cars, boats and even a small single engine airplane was inside.
"Stan, what the hell are we doing here?" Crockett asked.
"I figure you need some transportation. Now where is it? Ah! Here it is." It appeared to be a car with a car cover draped over it. "Are you guys ready?" Crockett and Tubbs nodded. Stan flung the cover off to reveal a 1986 white Ferrari Testarossa.
Crockett's jaw dropped to the floor. Rico smiled. It was "Crockett's car". The same car that he used when he was on the force. They had confiscated it shortly after he and Rico had quit eleven years ago. Crockett had assumed that it would be in a scrapyard by now but here she was, right in front of him. She still looked beautiful. The surface looked waxed and polished. The tires looked brand new. He hoped that there was still fresh oil in the pan. He looked at Stan with amazement, not knowing what to say.
"The Lieutenant couldn't see it go to waste, so he kept it here and I did some work with it over the years," Stan said with a smile as he pulled out the keys and held them in front of Crockett.
Sonny quickly grabbed them out of his hands. "I don't know what to say Stan," he mumbled.
Stan put his hand on Sonny's shoulder. "Thats' ok. Just bring it back in one piece not like the Daytona." Sonny laughed at the joke as he remembered the Daytona that was blown up by an IRA terrorist with a stinger missile. God, he missed that car but the Testarossa would do just fine.
"Well partner, shall we take her for as spin?" Sonny asked.
"Why not," Rico replied with a smile as they got in the car and sped off, leaving Stan behind.
They remind me of two school boys with a new toy, Stan thought as he laughed.
