Chapter 15
It took two hours for McGurn and his men to find Sleepy. He was at a friend's house outside of Miami. McGurn observed Sleepy from a block away looking through his spotting scope. He also observed two of his homeys armed with MAC-10's. What an asshole. He's so predictable, McGurn thought. Sleepy had sold him out. Now it was payback time. He grabbed his H&K SOCOM .45 caliber pistol from his waistband. He screwed a sound suppressor on the threaded barrel, inserted a magazine loaded with 230 gr. Hydra-Shock hollowpoint ammo, and chambered a round. "Alright," he said to Jerry and Clint, "I'm going in."
"But we could take 'em out from here," Jerry interrupted.
"No," McGurn said, "I wanna do this up close. You two take out the other two on my command."
"Yes sir," Jerry and Clint said together.
It took 30 minutes for McGurn to sneak his way to the backside of the house. He remembered all the training he received when he was in the Marines. All those years of being in the special forces was going to pay off, on Sleepy. As he approached the back door, he saw a pit bull sleeping in the back yard of the next house. This is going to be a little tricky, he thought. He didn't want to wake that dog up or else it would make his presence known if the dog started to bark. He wiped the sweat off his forehead and then proceeded to pick the lock of the back door. A minute later, the door was unlocked and he quietly cracked open the door. He pulled out a tactical mirror from his pocket and scanned the room. The room was clear. He slowly opened the door drawing his pistol. He slowly scanned the room by slicing the pie and then entered the room.
I should have never made that deal with those stupid cops, Sleepy thought. He was screwed. McGurn was gonna come after him. He knew that. His only option was to lay low for a while until this whole thing blew over. He had called two of his homeys to help protect him and more help was on the way. His entire gang would be there to support him and they would do anything to prevent a fellow brother from getting killed. He sat inside the living room watching television to pass the time. He looked down at his hands. They were shaking. He needed a beer to calm him down. A regular can wouldn't do it, a 40 ounce bottle was in order.
"Hey Dog, gimmie a 40 from the frig will ya?" Sleepy said to one of his friends.
"Alright man," he said as left for the kitchen.
"Carl, one of the bodyguards is leaving the room," Clint whispered into the microphone of his radio. "He's coming towards you."
McGurn received the message and hid in a dark corner of the kitchen. He flicked off the safety of his pistol and readied himself. He held his breath as he saw the kid enter the room, open the refrigerator and pulled out a beer. He exhaled slowly as he watched the kid leave the room.
"Here fool," Dog said as he tossed the forty to Sleepy. Sleepy opened the bottle and took a big gulp.
McGurn looked at Sleepy and his two friends using his mirror around the corner of the room. It was time. He pressed the button of his radio. "Five seconds boys," he whispered. He got up and assumed a combat stance. "Now!"
Jerry and Clint had their targets in their crosshairs. Jerry aimed for his target's left ear and Clint had the back of his target's head. Their BDC's were adjusted to the correct setting and wind had been calculated and adjusted. They also took note of the fact that they were shooting through a glass window. The tips of their trigger fingers were mated to the trigger. Breathe in, breathe out. Now squeeze.
The sound of the window breaking startled Sleepy. He realized what was happening when he saw his two bodyguards fall to the ground with blood spraying out of their heads. He knew it was McGurn.
McGurn turned around the corner and lifted his pistol towards the startled Sleepy. He placed his front sight on Sleepy's stomach. Sleepy now saw McGurn and reached into his waistband for his gun but it was too late. McGurn depressed the trigger three times getting a clear sight picture before each shot. Each 230 grain hollowpoint bullet found its target in Sleepy's stomach. It rocked Sleepy back as he fell onto the couch. His whole body was in shock as he saw McGurn approach him.
"Look at me!" growled McGurn. Sleepy looked up. McGurn saw the fear in his eyes. "You son of a bitch. You sold me to the cops. Now you're gonna pay the price. Fuck you and die!!!!" McGurn said has he placed the front sight of his pistol at Sleepy's head and stroked the trigger. The bullet punched through Sleepy's mouth and ripped through his brain blasting out the back of his head. It left a spray of blood on the wall behind him. He died instantly, his eyes still open from the fear forever imprinted in them. McGurn stood there for a moment to admire his handiwork. He then walked out the back door disappearing into the night.
One hour later...
Hardin and Andrews spent the last few hours looking for Sleepy. They decided to take a break at a local gas station to gas up and get a bite to eat. Joey sat down on the curb eating his hot dog when Zack had finished re-fueling the Mustang. He walked up to him and sat down next to him. He could see that his partner was upset. "Don't worry partner, we'll get him," Zack said. "I'm burning up just as much as you man. Keep cool man."
"I'm trying partner. I'm trying," mumbled Hardin.
"Let's just concentrate on gettin' Sleepy. Alright?"
"Cool man," Joey said after a long pause. "Alright where haven't we checked yet?"
"How about some of Sleepy's friends? Who was that one he hung around with all the time? Cold Dog?"
"Yeah something like that. Let's go partner," Hardin said with renewed enthusiasm. He grabbed his keys and got in the Mustang. Andrews was right behind him. He started the engine and hit the accelerator roaring down the street as he went.
They arrived at Dog's house fifteen minutes later. They didn't have to guess what happened when they saw the black and whites flashing their lights. They got out of the car, approached the officer in charge, and flashed their badges. "I'm Detective Joey Hardin and this is my partner, Zack Andrews, Miami Vice. Can we take a look around?" asked Hardin.
"Sure, follow me boys," the officer said. He them into the house where they saw the two bodies and Sleepy. They noticed that the windows had been shot out and the position of the bodies of Sleepy's bodyguards and Sleepy himself.
"Looks like the two boys were taken out from outside," said Zack. He looked at the wounds a little closer. "If I had to bet right now, I'd say it was a high caliber rifle. Probably a sniper."
"Think you're right partner," Joey said. "Same guy that did Castillo?"
"Probably," Zack said with a grim look on his face.
"But look at Sleepy though. Looks like he's got a few holes in his stomach and one in the head too. Hardin examined the wounds. "This doesn't look like a rifle wound to me. Looks like a handgun did this. Probably a .45 or a .44 and at close range too."
"You think it was McGurn?" asked Zack.
Joey nodded. "Yeah. He seems like the type that would do this up close and personal." He pulled out his cell phone from his pocket and hit the speed dial.
"Vice, Switek speaking."
"Switek, this is Hardin. We found Sleepy dead just now. We're still conducting the investigation but it looks like the work of McGurn. Two of Sleepy's friends were taken out at long range by a sniper and Sleepy was taken out at close range."
"Son of a bitch," Switek sighed. "All right, when you're done there I want you and Zack to report back to OCB."
"Yes sir," Joey said as he hung up. Shit, he thought. Back to square one.
