Chapter 3

The same night

New York, the Bronx

"Hey, Rico! Over here!" yelled Tommy.

Rico Tubbs spotted his friend from across the darkened, smoke filled bar. It was Miller time. Another hard week gone by, another weekend to look forward to. Rico walked across the room and sat down. "Hey Tommy, whassup brotha," he said. "Yo, bartender, gimme a beer man." The bartender filled a glass of beer and handed it to Rico. He immediately took a sip. This is the life he thought.

"Hey Rico, how was your day?" asked Tommy.

"Not bad man. Just another day at the office," he said with a smile. He took another sip of his beer. Sure, being a security guard at a bank wasn't exciting, in fact it was down right boring but it paid the bills. It was hard for him to find a job as a cop with his record. Nobody would want a loose cannon. He had moved from job to job over the last 10 years. Doing security work for banks and other firms. It wasn't like the good old days when he and Crockett were in Miami. Crockett, Castillo, Switek, Trudy, and Gina; he wondered what they were all up to these days.

"So do you think the Knicks are gonna do it this year man," asked Tommy as they watched the ball game on tv.

"I dunno man I think maybe the Lakers are gonna take it," replied Rico. He was never partial to Shaq and Kobe.

"Man you got it lucky at your bank man. I mean all those fine women workin' there! Have you asked any of them out yet?" Tommy asked.

Rico shook his head no. He really wasn't ready to start dating again. It had been 3 years since he split up with Valerie. When he came back to New York from Miami 11 years ago, he had patched things up with her and they had gotten married a year after. It was a nice but small wedding. Crockett was his best man, Switek a groomsman, and even Castillo managed to attend. A year later they had a son, Rafael. Soon after, their marriage took a down turn. Maybe it was the job or the lack of money or their arguments over stupid things. In any case, Valerie had taken Rafael and moved to Cleveland. He still kept in touch with them for his son's sake but he and Valerie were still "friends".

Both he and Tommy sat at the bar for another half and hour. The game on tv had just ended. He sat there telling stories to the his young friend about the good old days in Miami chasing down drug dealers. The local news broadcast had just started. He was still chatting with Tommy when he heard the news reporter mention something about a police officer getting shot in Miami. That got his attention. "Hey bartender, could you turn that up?" Rico asked.

"A Miami vice police officer was shot earlier tonight while on a weapons bust," the reporter said. "The officer, Lieutenant Martin Castillo, was shot in the abdomen with a high caliber rifle. The suspect in the shooting is one Carl McGurn. He is described as a Caucasian male, 6 feet tall, 200 pounds, and has brown hair. He is still at large and is considered extremely dangerous. Lieutenant Castillo is listed in critical but stable condition...."

Jesus, Marty, Rico thought. He had to go to him. After all they had gone though together and after Marty backed him and Sonny after they went after General Borbon, it was the least he could do. He had to go to him now.

"Hey Rico, where ya going?" Tommy asked as he watched Tubbs get up from the bar and walk towards the door, disappearing through the darkness and the smoke.

The next day, Gulf of Mexico 50 miles from New Orleans

"Hey dad, I think I got a bite," said Billy.

"Are you sure," Dad asked.

"I think so. Damn! I lost it," Billy said a few moments later. Billy Crockett, his half brother Jimmy Ballard, and his father James Sonny Crockett, were on their last day of their week long fishing trip aboard the Caitlin Davies. What Billy liked best about the whole thing, besides the fact that he could spend time with his dad and brother, it was free. Having a dad who owned a fishing charter helped especially because paying thousands of dollars a year for tuition, dorms and books at UCLA was taking its toll on him financially. For Jimmy, 11 years old, it was just a fun time away from school. His mom, Caroline which was Sonny ex-wife, and his dad, Bob let him go. Ever since Billy left the house, Jimmy felt a bit alone. Billy was his big brother, his mentor, and his best friend. He missed having him around.

For Sonny, it was his new life away from the crime, grime, and slime. After 15 years on the force, he had burned out. He was tired of leading the double life he had led for so long ever since he lost his memory after being caught in an explosion in Miami and assuming his "Burnett" identity and becoming involved in a drug war. There was some things that he did miss about Miami, the fast cars, the women and his friends at the department. He missed how everyday he would walk into the office and see Switek come in with the doughnuts, the jokes, and most of all, Rico. God, he missed that guy. The last time he saw him was at his wedding. How long has it been? Ten years? He thought to himself. He decided that after they get back to New Orleans, he would call him and do some catching up. He remember that he and Valerie had a son but he lost track of him after that. He began to smile as he remember all the good times they had together when Jimmy's fishing pole began to shake violently.

"Uncle Sonny!" Jimmy yelled, "I think I got a bite!"

"Ya think so!" Sonny said as he helped Jimmy with his pole.

"Reel him in!" shouted Billy.

"I'm trying," Jimmy grunted as he struggled with the pole. Jimmy and Uncle Sonny struggled with the fish for a few minutes. They let the fish get tired before the reel him in. It was a beauty. Looked like it was about 5 pounds. Not too bad for the little guy Sonny thought to himself.

Billy got his camera from his bag and took a picture of his brother with the fish. "Smile," he said as he took the picture.

"All right!" cheered Sonny. "Now, the person who catches it, gets to cook it." He looked at Jimmy with and sinister smile.

"But Uncle Sonny, I can't cook," whined Jimmy.

Sonny leaned back and laughed. "Don't worry big guy. Good ol' Uncle Sonny will teach you his secret recipe for this fish."

After they had finished dinner, Sonny sailed the boat back towards port. All three of them sat down and talked about the trip. They joked around and talked about women, although Jimmy was a little embarrassed by all the talk about girls. They were close enough to land so Billy turned on the radio to listen to some tunes. He tuned in to a news channel when Sonny heard something about Miami. Wonder what's going on at the old stomping grounds, he thought.

"Billy, hold it there for a sec will ya," Sonny asked.

"Sure dad," Billy replied.

"A Miami vice police officer was shot last night while on a weapons bust," the reporter said.

Oh my God, Marty, he thought. Somebody shot him? What bastard did this to him?

His first thought was to get his ass back to Miami to see if Castillo was alright.

"Hey dad," Billy said as he saw the shock on his dad's face. "Wasn't he your boss when you were with vice?"

"He sure as hell was," Sonny said. "I just hope he's alright."

"I'm sure he's ok dad," Billy assured his father. "The reporter said he's stable."

"But critical," Sonny interupted. "I've got to go to him and see if he's ok." Sonny went to the controls to his ship and increased the throttle to full power. He had to get to Miami as soon as possible.
