Chapter 15
It was a long grueling ride in the helicopter to the hospital. Sergeant Stan Switek sat in the back of the helicopter looking at Castillo lying in the stretcher. He was alive but barely. Stan looked at the wound. It looked like the round had hit him in the stomach. If he had been hit a few inches higher, he would have been dead instantly. Stan grabbed Castillo's hand. Hang in the there Lieutenant, he said to himself. He thought of all the cases they worked together and after everything they went through together it would be a shame if it all ended like this. He and Castillo were the only two vice cops left from the "original crew". Crockett, Tubbs, Gina, and Trudy had all retired or transfered to other divisions. He tried hard not to lose his composure. He would get the bastard who did this. He'd do hard time. He'd make sure of that.
The helicopter finally touched down on the hospital's helipad. A medical team was waiting. As soon as the door opened, they hauled out the stretcher carrying Lt. Castillo and wheeled him away. Switek stepped out of the chopper and approached the doctor in charge.
"Sergeant Switek, Miami Vice."
"Doctor Wong," the doctor replied as he shook his hand. "Tell me what happened."
"Not much to go on. He was on a bust when it went sour. He chased one of the suspects out the back door when he got shot."
"What did he get hit with?" Dr. Wong asked.
"Not really sure of the caliber but it was probably a sniper with hi-powered rifle. It must of had a silencer or something on it since we no one heard the shot," replied Switek.
"That might be a good thing," Dr. Wong said. "You see I was in the Marines once long ago and I do know that sound suppressors like that degrade the performance of the rounds. It looks like he's wearing body armor. I'd say that helped too. He'd probably be dead if it weren't for his vest and the silencer."
"Will he make it?" Switek asked trying hard to hold back the tears.
"It's too early to tell at this point," replied Dr. Wong. "I'll let you know as soon as I can, ok? Excuse me Sergeant, but I gotta get to work. Nurse, can you escort the sergeant to the waiting room please?"
"Thanks doc," Switek said as the nurse led him out of the room. Switek went to one of the vending machines and got himself a diet coke. He opened it up and sipped on it for a few minutes. He decided to find out how the wrap up of the bust was doing. He pulled out his cell phone and punched the buttons rapidly.
"This is Richards," the other line replied.
"Richards, this is Sergeant Switek. How's you guys doing over there?"
"We're just finishing up. We got the weapons and the drugs. That's the good news. The bad news is, of course, no McGurn and we lost one our snipers, Smith," Richards said.
"He was shot?" Switek asked.
"Yes sir in the head," Richards replied. "The round hit him right in the nose and uh... well sir it uh..." It was obvious he was getting a little sick to his stomach.
"That's ok I don't need a description," Switek said. That clinches it. It had to have been a sniper he though. "Have you found Sleepy yet?"
"No sir, not yet. I've got every black and white I got looking for him."
"Shit. All right keep me posted."
"Yes sir."
Switek hung up and took another sip of his coke. What's Sleepy trying to do? Get himself killed? He'd probably try and get back to his "homeys" but if McGurn ever figured out that he sold him, Sleepy was a dead gang-banger.
"Hey Sarge!" a voice called. Switek looked up. It was Detective Joey Hardin and his partner, Zack Andrews walking through the door.
"Hey guys," Switek said.
"We got here as soon as we heard," Hardin said. "What the hell happened?"
"Most likely a sniper. He took out one of our shooters and then shot the lieutenant when he went after McGurn." Switek replied.
"Were gonna get that bastard who did it," growled Andrews. "Were gonna get them good and"
"That's enough Zack!" barked Switek. "There's no need for cowboys in this unit. You got it!?" He could see the hurt and anger inside both of his two men. He knew the feeling. "You're not the only one who's hurtin'." The tears threatened his eyes again. No, not in front of them. "He'll make it." He's gotta make it he told himself. "Where's Capt. Cutter?"
"He's with the reporters giving them a statement on what happened tonight," Andrews said.
"Stay here. I'll need to talk to the Captain."
Switek walked to the main entrance of the hospital where the reporters were wrapping up the press conference. He saw Captain Paul Cutter near the front doors. Cutter spotted Switek comming towards him and approached him.
"Sergeant, good to see you," Cutter said as he put his hand on Switek's back leading him away from the reporters. "How's the Lieutenant doing?"
"We don't have any word yet. He's still in the operating room."
"OK. Tell me what you know."
"Well, as soon as the entry team went in, the shit hit the fan. I got out of the van and went in. When I got in, I saw the back door open. As I went out the back door, I saw Castillo go down. I didn't hear a shot."
"What about McGurn?"
"No sign of him or Sleepy. We got every black and white looking for him."
"Damn," Cutter muttered to himself. "McGurn's gonna go after him. I just know it. Maybe we could use Sleepy as bait to get to him but we gotta find Sleepy or else we may lose all chances of arresting McGurn. Where's Hardin and Andrews?"
"They're upstairs in the waiting room."
"Have them aid in the search. If they find him, have them contact us and well set up an ambush for McGurn."
"Yes sir."
"In the mean time, I want you in charge of Vice until Marty recovers."
"Me? Sir, I can't..."
"No, no, you're ready to work without a net. You've been ready for a long time," Cutter said as he put his and on Switek's shoulder. "I've got every confidence in your ability and experience."
"Yes sir and thanks sir," replied Switek.
"Sergeant Switek?" a voice called out. Switek turned around. It was the doctor.
"Doc, this is Captain Cutter. Captain, this is Doctor Wong." said Switek. "How's the Lieutenant?"
"Well, we've managed to stop the bleeding for now. The bullet entered the abdomen on his left side and went through the other side. Unfortunately, there was major damage to his left kidney and he'll probably lose it. He's not out of the woods yet but he's stable for now. I'll let you know if there are any changes in his condition."
"Thanks doc," said Switek as the doctor left the room. Cutter and Switek went to the waiting room where Joey and Zack were still waiting. "Hardin, Andrews, get out on the streets and find Sleepy now."
"Yes sir," they both replied.
